Alison Janney Set To Star In Chris Colfer-Penned STRUCK BY LIGHTNING

Posted on 29 June 2011 by Rich Drees

Allison Janney will star opposite Chris Colfer in Struck By Lightning, which Glee star Colfer has also penned. Colfer himself confirmed that Janney will play his mother in the coming-of-age comedy on twitter this morning -

The film opens with Golfer’s high school character being struck and killed by a lightning bolt and then proceeds to tell in flashback how he blackmailed his fellow students into contributing to the literary magazine he was putting together. Brian Dannelly, who helmed the 2004 conservative Christian high school satire Saved, will be directing.

Colfer is not the first star of the popular musical dramedy television series to turn to script writing in their spare time. Last year, Dianna Agron had an untitled spec script optioned, though nothing has really been heard of the project since.

Joe Johnston Would Love To Make A ROCKETEER Sequel

Posted on 29 June 2011 by Rich Drees

Oh, do not tease me so.

I’ve often called Disney’s criminally underrated 1991 film The Rocketeer, an adaption of artist Dave Stevens hero, one of the best comic book adaptations ever. It has everything you would want – a dashing hero with a rocket backpack saving a beautiful damsel in distress, cunning villains, exploding blimps and a sense of joy and fun that permeates everything. And while the movie may not have been a financial success for Disney at the time, it has since grown a legion of fans who have discovered the film on home video.

The man responsible for directing the 1930s-set film is also the man behind the 1940-set Captain America: The First Avenger, and is currently doing the publicity rounds for the film. In an interview with Film Journal, Johnston was asked about The Rocketeer and the chance we would ever see that world on the big screen again.

I’d love to make a sequel to The Rocketeer. The film didn’t do as well at the box office as we all hoped, but it has endured and generated a following. It was great fun and I’d love to re-explore Cliff Secord’s world.

The Rocketeer has been getting a but of a boost lately in comics circle with IDW having recently launched an anthology mini-series with a number of top line creators telling stories of the hero.

Of course, Johnston isn’t the only one. The film’s star Billy Campbell stated that he wouldn’t be adverse to strapping on the rocket pack again to play the high-flying Cliff Secord a second time back in 2008.

So what do you say Disney?

New Releases: June 28

Posted on 28 June 2011 by Rich Drees

1. Transformers: Dark Of The Moon (Paramount, 4,011 Theaters, 157 Minutes, Rated PG-13): The first film was, for me, a pleasant surprise. I didn’t go in expecting much, and was solidly entertained. The second film, well, sucked. Too strong a word? You should have seen the ones I decided not to use.

So this one has two easy goals to reach: be better that the last film (since it had a script before it started filming, it’s already pretty much guaranteed to have that one in the bag) and be as good as the first one.

Since most of the franchise’s cast is back with one notable exception (tsk, tsk, tsk, Megan. Calling your director Adolf Hitler while forgetting your producer directed Schindler’s List? Yeah, that’s just asking to get fired.) and the new cast members run the gamut from a Victoria’s Secret model to Dr. McDreamy, from Oscar Winners and nominees (Frances McDormand & John Malkovich) to the two actors with the best small parts from Knocked Up (Ken Jeong & Alan Tudyk), it should be decent. Although there is a Bill O’Reilly cameo, so it’s guaranteed not to be great.

GI JOE 2 Enlists Two More

Posted on 28 June 2011 by Rich Drees

The ranks of the cast for the upcoming GI Joe 2 have swelled by two more. The Paramount sequel has just added RZA and D. J. Cotrona are both in negotiations to appear in the sequel.

The pair join returning cast members Tatum Channing and Ray Park, and new cast member Dwayne Johnson and Elodie Yung.

Rapper-turned-actor RZA will be playing the martial arts master known as the Blind Master who trained Joe team members Snake Eyes (Park) and Jinx (Yung) in the ways of the ninja. Cotrona will be playing the shotgun-wielding Flint. In the comics, Flint had a romance with fellow team member Lady Jaye. There’s no word as to whether or not that character will be in the new film, though.

Jon Chu will be directing this installment with cameras set to roll later this year.

So What Is UltraViolet And Will It Change How You Watch Movies?

Posted on 27 June 2011 by Rich Drees

While most people are still making the adjustment to blu-ray players and streaming video services such as Netflix, Hollywood is already working on what may the next generation of delivering their content to consumers.

The new system is called UltraViolet, a digital cloud service that allows consumers to purchase content in the form of a movie or television show, store it online and access it through any number of enabled devices including smart phones, tablets, laptops, blu-ray players and televisions. In essence, UltraViolet appears to combine aspects of buying DVDs or blu-ray discs with the flexibility of streaming by allowing users to build their own custom libraries that they can then access with the device or devices of their choice.

The system has been in development since 2008 and now DECE, the consortium of content providers and technology manufacturers who have come together to create it, have announced that it is ready for roll out later this year. Consumers will start seeing Ultra-Violet compatible discs on store shelves at some in the fall. Around that same time, apps will become available to allow consumers to play their cloud-based content on their PCs, game consoles and smart phones early next year should see the release of the first electronic devices with UltraViolet capability built in.

Everyone involved in the development of UltraViolet is hoping that the system will entice consumers back to buying their media rather than renting from various outlets. The studios have seen a slump in DVD and blu-ray revenue in recent years thanks to the rise of services like Netflix and Redbox. Last year the market plummeted some 44% from 2009’s $7.97 billion to $4.47 billion as video-on-demand and subscription services became more popular with consumers. Although blu-ray player sales have increased by 16% from 2009 to 2010, it hasn’t been big enough to replace the lost DVD revenue.

Studios can make up to $15 for each movie sold, as opposed to only a few dollars for each film rented.

So far, the only two major players who have not signed on to be part of UltraViolet are Disney and Apple. Disney declined to participate in UltraViolet’s development as they were working on their own online digital locker system.
Apple’s reluctance to join may be the one stumbling block to UltraViolet’s ultimate success, as they control nearly 60% of the download market through their iTunes store.

Another major stumbling block to UltraViolet’s might be the fact that they are beginning the technology roll out right at the heart of the holiday shopping season with some analysts speculating that might not be the best time to try and educate consumers about new technology.

Consumers may also balk at the idea of not physically owning their media. And given the recent hacking of Sony’s Playstation Network, the DECE consortium is going to have to go a long way to prove that people’s individual storage lockers are secure.
Personally, I’m not sure I would make much use of UltraViolet as I don’t really enjoy the idea of watching movies squashed onto the small screens of portable devices. But I can see where the allure of such a system is for all those who have had a hand in developing it. We’ll see if the public will find it alluring as well.

Tom Hanks Says “They’re Working On” TOY STORY 4

Posted on 27 June 2011 by Rich Drees

Tom Hanks has been out beating the drum hard to support his new film Larry Crowne. This morning he appeared on the BBC’s Breakfast News program where, towards the end of the interview, the reporter casually asked if there would be a fourth Toy Story film. To which Hanks replied –

I think there will be yeah. Yeah, yeah. They’re working on it now. There you go.

Well, while I can’t say for certain without seeing the interview itself, I think that Hanks is just pulling the poor presenter’s leg here. As he has been making the publicity rounds, Hanks has been a bit silly in many of appearances. If you’ve seen his appearance on Telemundo where he winds up dancing with the program’s weathergirl then you know what I’m talking about.

Granted, if someone at PIXAR came up with a great story for a fourth Toy Story feature, I’m sure that they would go ahead and develop it. But given that the last film opened just a year ago and everyone seemed adamant that it would be the last, I don’t think that anyone is seriously considering another feature. I would also hazard the guess that given the critical drubbing Cars 2 took this past weekend that the idea of doing a sequel to any PIXAR film has probably cooled somewhat.

For now, let’s leave this in the realm of “rumor only.”

Michael Bay’s Letter To Projectionists

Posted on 27 June 2011 by Rich Drees

Michael Bay is continuing his crusade to get his latest film Transformers: Dark Of The Moon projected in a way that will ensure the 3D format of the film comes through as crisp as possible. Over the weekend, a letter from Transformers studio Paramount and signed by Bay has circulated with the director imploring projectionists to have theater projectors set to the proper brightness.

(Of course, the letter doesn’t take into account that many theater chains that have gone all digital have all but eliminated the position of projectionist, instead leaving the job of starting and stopping a film to a manager or usher or just having the projectors on a timer. But that’s a rant for another day.)

Transformers: Dark Of The Moon opens Tuesday evening.

Warners Still Moving Forward On GREEN LANTERN Sequel

Posted on 26 June 2011 by Rich Drees

While the box office performance for Warner Brothers Green Lantern has probably not lived up to expectations, studio is reportedly still going ahead with plans for a sequel.

The Hollywood Reporter is saying that Warners is hoping that the film will have some legs at the box office in order to pay back its estimated $200 million production cost. With the Harry Potter franchise ending with the release of Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows Part 2 in just a few weeks, the studio has been hoping to replace it with a series of comic book adaptations.

That might prove a bit difficult, though. Last weekend, the film opened to a soft weekend box office take of $53 million last week. This past weekend saw a drop at the box office of some 66%, only pulling in an estimated $18 million. Adding in the small bit of foreign box office intake and the film has only pulled in just shy of $119 million in ten days. (Figures from Box Office Mojo.) And that doesn’t include the massive amount spent on advertising the film.

But the Reporter‘s story quotes an Warner Bros. president of domestic distribution Dan Fellman as optimistically saying that “the movie is settling in, pointing out that fanboy pics often see a significant drop-off in their second weekends.”

Of course, Warners has been planning on a sequel since last year when in June they hired the films writers Greg Berlanti, Michael Green and Marc Guggenheim to begin developing a storyline for Green Lantern 2 which was then handed off to writer Michael Goldenberg in August.

Is A Pee Wee Herman Film Close To A Green Light?

Posted on 26 June 2011 by Rich Drees

When we last heard from actor/comedian Paul Ruebens, he was working on a screenplay for a new film featuring his Pee Wee Herman persona. Collaborating with him on the project was writer/actor Paul Rust with none other than Judd Apatow serving as producer on the proposed project.

If you’ve been wondering how things have been going on that project, Ruebens has told the Hollywood Reporter that he and Rust have just turned in the script to Apatow. Ruebens also elaborated on how Apatow helped shape the screenplay -

He’s bringing such an interesting side to it. He’s constantly having us talk about and address the emotional core of Pee-wee Herman. It’s adding a dimension I never had before. Judd, if you’re reading this, I think it’s ready to green light!

I have to say that although I am not much of a fan of the Pee Wee Herman character, I am intrigued by the idea of Apatow helping Ruebens and Rust to bring a deeper characterization to Pee Wee. But will fans warm to the idea of a more fleshed out or humanized version of Pee Wee? Apatow seems to think so. I just remains to be seen whether a studio will agree with him.
