THE IMITATION GAME Heads This Year’s BLACK LIST

The true story of the World War Two cryptologist who broke the Nazi’s presumably “unbreakable” Enigma Code machines tops this year’s Black List of the best unproduced screenplay currently circulating in Hollywood. British novelist Graham Moore’s The Imitation Game, about how mathematician Alan Turing cracked the Nazi’s wartime communications while simultaneously laying the groundwork for modern computers earned an incredible 133 mentions. The previous highest vote earner was The Beaver which pulled 67 votes in 2007. While I haven’t read all of the scripts named to this year’s list, I have read The Imitation Game and its win here is well deserved.

As per their own description-

The Black List was compiled from the suggestions of over 300 film executives, each of whom contributed the names of up to ten of their favorite scripts that were written in, or are somehow uniquely associated with, 2011 and will not have begun principal photography during this calendar year.

This year, scripts had to receive at least six mentions to be included on the The Black List.

All reasonable effort has been made to confirm the information contained herein. The Black List apologizes for all misspellings, misattributions, incorrect representation identification, and questionable 2011 affiliations.

It has been said many times, but it’s worth repeating:

The Black List is not a “best of “ list. It is, at best, a “most liked” list.

The Imitation Game sold in October to Warner brothers as a possible project for Leonardo DiCaprio.

Perusing the complete list, there are few trends that do stand out. There seem to be a number of show business-centric stories (Chewie, Saving Mr Banks, Home For Christmas- Bob Hope In Korea) and there seems to be a few zombie scripts, a holdover from one of last year’s more popular trends. Interestingly, there are two different “Pinocchio” projects, one of which is a prequel! You can download this year’s Black List release here, or just read all the titles listed below in order of votes received.
