BLADE RUNNER 30th Anniversary Blu-Ray Set Evokes Deja Vu

One would think that trying to top the completeness of Warner Home Video’s Blade Runner: Ultimate Collectors Edition DVD, Hi-Def Disc (remember those?) and blu-ray release of a few years back would be pretty hard to do. Well, in conjunction with the release of a new blu-ray box set to commemorate the film’s 30th anniversary this year, it is debatable that the studio is even trying.

Here’s a list of the released details direct from the press release –

Over 10 hours of bonus content!

  • “Final Cut” feature on Blu-ray and DVD
  • Three additional feature versions on one disc, seamlessly branched
  • All new bonus content disc featuring the existing EC from the UCE plus
  • Photo Gallery with 1,000+ new images
  • “Dangerous Days” documentary
  • The Work Print feature version
  • Over 6 featurettes and more

“The #1 Sci-Fi Film of all time” marks its return post 10 month moratorium with an all new 3-Disc Blu-ray/DVD and UV 30th Anniversary commemorative gift set. Revisit the illustrious Final Cuton Blu-ray, DVD and get a UV copy of the feature. Additionally, the gift set features an all new concept spinner car for your collection, action Lenticular and a 72 page art production book with never-before-seen Ridley sketches, poster art and photos from the set.

Outside of a photogallery with “over 1000 new photos”, a new 72 page photo book and a few incidentals like a new spinner car toy, this new set feels like a reshuffling of the material already found on the UCE without the nifty silver suitcase packaging.

Unless you are a die-hard Blade Runner fan or barring the announcement of a new transfer of all the material, if you already have the UCE, I can see no real reason to double dip on this set.

That’s not to say that the extras aren’t worth it. The documentary Dangerous Days is one of the most comprehensive dissections of a film’s production I have ever seen and definitely considering it worth owning.

For those who want to own Blade Runner on blu-ray but who don’t want the complete 30th anniversary box set, Warners is offering just a 3-disc Digibook release.

All versions of the Blade Runner 30th Anniversary Collector’s Edition hits shelves on October 23.
