Five On Short List For CAPTAIN AMERICA 2 Love Interest, Black Widow Return Confirmed

With Iron Man 3 and Thor: The Dark World currently in production, Marvel Studios is now turning its eye towards prepping their next superhero flick Captain America: The Winter Soldier. To that end, directors Joe and Anthony Russo have reportedly compiled a short list of five actresses they would like to cast in a significant role that will be the love interest of Cap himself, Steve Rogers (Chris Evans).

The actresses are Emelia Clarke (Game of Thrones), Jessica Brown Findlay (Downton Abbey), Teresa Palmer (Warm Bodies), Imogen Poots (Fright Night) and Alison Brie (Community).

If the role is for comics character Sharon Carter, niece of the first film’s Peggy Carter played by Haley Atwill, then all ladies are at least good choices. Brie might have a bit of an in with the directors as she has worked with them before on Community. But considering the evolution of Sharon’s character over the years in the comics, I would not be surprised if Marvel went with someone who had some action experience. (I hope that is not much of a possible spoiler.)

But whomever they cast in the film won’t be the only lady in Cap’s life. As Eric Sneider pointed out last night as the news about the casting shortlist hit, Scarlett Johanson will be back as SHIELD agent Natasha Romanoff aka Black Widow.

Can’t say I’m surprised by this as The Avengers seemed to imply that SHIELD was overseeing Steve Rogers’ assimilation into the present day following his stint of suspended animation starting back in World War Two, so an appearance from at least one SHIELD character we’ve already seen seems like a no-brainer.

Captain America’s love interest in the next film: Who really gives a *%&# ? I mean, noone goes to a Captain America film to find out about his love life. The casting director can throw the dice and it probably wont matter since it’ll likely be another canned pretty girl character who in this day and age will be typecast as smarter than she lets on and be used as an excuse to fill in plot holes or a possible spy for whomever bad guy is in the next film.

I suppose it makes for good tabloid reading but the fans will wave it along with only mild interest, meanwhile wondering when they’ll return to nazi stomping and awesomeness like Cap N Friends are known for doing best.
