Is Carey Mulligan the choice to headline the Hillary Rodham-Clinton biopic Rodham? That’s what The Wrap is reporting, saying that for the past several weeks the role has been The Great Gatsby star’s to lose having beaten out the likes of Jessica Chastain, Scarlett Johansson and Jennifer Lawrence.
The film tells the story of a fresh-out-of-law school Hillary Rodham, making her way through Washington DC first as an attorney at the Children’s Defense Fund and then as the youngest lawyer chosen for the House Judiciary Committee to Impeach Nixon. Along the way she must deal with her feelings for her college boyfriend, one Bill Clinton, and whether she should continue to concentrate on her Washington career or if she should move to Arkansas to help him embark on his first political campaign.
Ever since writer Young Il Kim’s screenplay placed fourth on last year’s Black List of the hottest unproduced scripts in Hollywood, there has been speculation as to who would land the meaty title role. I’ve read the script and the role is a juicy part for the right actress and Mulligan may just be the right actress.
The Wrap reports that producers want to have an actress attached before they begin looking for financing. The next step is to have Mulligan meet with director James Ponsoldt, who is reportedly eager to have her sign onto the project.
The project is under a bit of a time crunch as it is hoped to have the film in theaters in advance of a possible Rodham-Clinton run for the presidency in 2016.
