George Lucas Has Not Talked With J. J. Abrams About STAR WARS EPISODE VII Yet

One of the big fears from some people when it was announced last year that there would be new Star Wars films was that, much like the prequel trilogies, George Lucas would mess things up again. Even when it was pointed out that he was sitting out the actual production, serving only in a “Creative Consultant” capacity. And as it turns out, Lucas has not yet worked in that capacity with director J. J. Abrams.

Speaking with Access Hollywood at the Daytime Emmys, Lucas stated –

I have not spoken to J.J. He’s been busy with Star Trek, and I’m sure that he’ll let me know when he’s got some questions. So, you know, that’s all going well. Kathy [Kennedy, the new head of Lucasfilm] tells me it’s working out great.

For his part, Abrams has stated that he would be willing to check in with Lucas with any questions he may have about the workings of the Star Wars universe. And now that his duties towards Star Trek Into Darkness should be all but done, I am sure that Abrams and screenwriter Michael Arndt are deep into work on Episode VII and that if they need to I am sure that they’ll reach out to him.

But I think that Lucas is happy just to let them chart their own course. As he states in regards to the characters he created, “I don’t have to worry about these guys any more.”
