Ben Mendelsohn Up For CAPTAIN MARVEL Villain

Ben Mendelsohn Robin Hood Origins

Ben Mendelsohn, who essayed one of the lead villains in last year’s Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, will be doing the same work against Brie Larson. Mendelsohn is in talks to take the chief bad guy role in Marvel Studios’ Captain Marvel, which Larson is headlining.

The Hollywood Reporter is breaking the story, but they do not have any word as to the name of Mendelsohn’s character. We do know that the alien shape-shifting race the Skrulls are set to be the main antagonists in this comic book adaption. Mendelsohn could be playing one of their leaders, or he could be playing an Earth human in league with the Skrulls. The Skrulls have been part of Marvel’s comic book universe since the 1960s when they first appeared in an early issue of the Fantastic Four. Since then, they have made numerous attempts to invade Earth and have involved the Avengers in their war against another alien race known as the Kree. The Kree were introduced into Marvel’s Cinematic Universe in 2014’s Guardians Of The Galaxy.

Captain Marvel will be directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, who worked with Mendelsohn previously on 2015’s Mississippi Grind. Larson will be starring as Air Force pilot Carol Danvers, who gets into an accident which fuses her DNA with that of an alien, granting her superpowers. Samuel L Jackson is slated to appear as Nick Fury, head of the spy agency SHIELD.

The film is set in the 1990s, predating the action of most of the other chapters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, yet it is rumored to be an important lead in to the untitled fourth Avengers film due in 2019.

Captain Marvel hits theaters on March 8, 2019.
