Amazon Casts First Actor For Upcoming MIDDLE EARTH Series

Amazon has reportedly cast the first actor for their upcoming multi-season television series based on J. R. R. Tolkien’s Lord Of The Rings and its Middle Earth fantasy setting.

Variety is reporting from several sources that Australian actress Markella Kavenagh has been cast and is in talks to appear in the unnamed series in the role Tyra. Amazon and Kavenagh’s representatives would not comment to Variety for the story.

A quick scan through some of my Tolkien-related reference material doesn’t reveal any character to ever have appeared with the name Tyra in the author’s vast Middle Earth-related writings. It is most likely that the character is a creation by series creators JD Payne and Patrick McKay or that the name is merely a placeholder for the real character’s name, which could possibly be a spoiler for the show’s storyline.

Little has been revealed about the series’ plot except that it will be set in the Second Age of Middle Earth, thousands of years before the events of The Lord Of The Rings. It is a time when the Great Rings of Power, ruled over by Sauron’s One Ring, were first forged. The Second Age stretched a little over three thousand years and saw a great many things including the rise and fall of a great empire and the great war on which Elves and men fought to stop Sauron from conquering all of Middle Earth.

Kavenagh has previously appeared in the Australian TV series Romper Stomper and on Amazon’s Picnic At Hanging Rock.
