Ah, Sony. It decides to capitalize on the success of Spider-Man: Homecoming by jump starting its long in development Venom film. It shows it is serious by casting Oscar nominees Tom Hardy and Michelle Williams in the film. Then it completely destroys any good will the film had by putting out a muddled, confusing teaser trailer that gave no idea what the film was about to the uninitiated and alienated the comic fans by not giving them the payoff they were expecting.

Thankfully, Sony has a second chance to make a first impression.

The studio brought a new trailer to this week’s CinemaCon in Las Vegas, and it appears that they actually hired someone who knows how to cut a trailer work on it this time. It is far more coherent in showing tone and plot. And, yes, we get to see Venom in the trailer final frames.

The trailer also shows that the supposed “leaked” plot from back in March seems to be mostly wrong (To start, Hardy’s Eddie Brock is not an ex-con in the film, he’s a reporter like in the comics).

Overall, this new trailer has moved my opinion of the film from “AVOID” to “CATIOUSLY OPTIMISTIC.” Check out the trailer and see if you feel the same way.

Venom opens on October 5th.

Sad news, people. Yesterday brought us the last Deadpool 2 trailer. Now, all we have to keep us going until the film is released is the random TV ad.

How is it? Well, it meta-references Thanos and the DC Extended Universe, so pretty darn awesome! In addition, we get to see a little more of the plot, how Deadpool gets his team together, and what is sure to be the breakout character of 2018, Peter.

In case you were unclear on the tone of the film, here is the official synopsis from the Fox YouTube page for the trailer:

After surviving a near fatal bovine attack, a disfigured cafeteria chef (Wade Wilson) struggles to fulfill his dream of becoming Mayberry’s hottest bartender while also learning to cope with his lost sense of taste. Searching to regain his spice for life, as well as a flux capacitor, Wade must battle ninjas, the yakuza, and a pack of sexually aggressive canines, as he journeys around the world to discover the importance of family, friendship, and flavor – finding a new taste for adventure and earning the coveted coffee mug title of World’s Best Lover.

Tickets are on sale already at certain ticket outlets. The film arrives May 18, 2018.

Solo: A Star Wars Story

Advertising so far for Solo: A Star Wars Story has been pretty light so far, especially considering that the film is being released at the end of next month. That might be one of the reasons why it is currently tracking towards the lowest opening weekend of any Star Wars film since the franchise was rebooted in 2015. Will this new trailer that just dropped for the film change any of that? Maybe. It certainly gives some new images that whet the appetite, even if the train/monorail robbery sequence looks as if it was lifted from an episode of Joss Whedon’s late, lamented Firefly TV series. Despite rumors, Alden Ehrenreich’s interpretation of Han Solo seems just fine and everything we see of Donald Glover’s Lando Calrissian looks great. And is that second wookie we see with Chewbacca a member of his family? Are we actually going to see a part of the dread Star Wars Holiday Special brought into canon?

Here’s the official studio synopsis –

Board the Millennium Falcon and journey to a galaxy far, far away in Solo: A Star Wars Story, an all-new adventure with the most beloved scoundrel in the galaxy. Through a series of daring escapades deep within a dark and dangerous criminal underworld, Han Solo meets his mighty future copilot Chewbacca and encounters the notorious gambler Lando Calrissian, in a journey that will set the course of one of the Star Wars saga’s most unlikely heroes.

Solo: A Star Wars Story opens on May 25, 2018.

The First MAN WHO KILLED DON QUIXOTE Trailer Is Here But So Are New Legal Woes For Gilliam’s Film - Trailer – FilmBuffOnline http://www.filmbuffonline.com/FBOLNewsreel/wordpress/2018/04/05/man-killed-don-quixote-trailergilliam/ http://www.filmbuffonline.com/FBOLNewsreel/wordpress/2018/04/05/man-killed-don-quixote-trailergilliam/#respond Thu, 05 Apr 2018 16:09:53 +0000 http://www.filmbuffonline.com/FBOLNewsreel/wordpress/?p=43400 We have a trailer, but the film's future is still in doubt over an old contract. The post The First MAN WHO KILLED DON QUIXOTE Trailer Is Here But So Are New Legal Woes For Gilliam’s Film appeared first on FilmBuffOnline.

]]>

I am sure that at some point while watching the ongoing struggle that filmmaker Terry Gilliam has gone through over the nearly two decades that he has struggled to get his passion project The Man Who Killed Don Quixote made that I said something along the lines that I would believe that we would see the film only once we see the first trailer released.

Well, the first trailer for the film has been released, but there’s still a possible legal impediment that could hold up Gilliam’s hopes to have the film premier at the Cannes Film Festival later this year.

First, though, let’s take a look at the trailer which features Adam Driver as a commercials director and Jonathan Pryce as a man who believes he is actually Cervantes “Knight of the Mournful Countenance” Don Quixote.

Last year, as production got underway, this long-form synopsis was released –

Once upon a time, Toby was an idealistic young film student. His great achievement, a lyrical re-working of the Don Quixote story set in a quaint old Spanish village. But that was then; these days he is a jaded, arrogant and over-sexed commercials director. Money and glamour have derailed him, and now he juggles his boss’s wife Jacqui, a biblical storm and his own ego as he tries to complete a new commercial shoot in Spain. Until a mysterious Gypsy approaches him with an ancient copy of Toby’s student film: Toby is moved and sets off to find the little village where he made his primary opus all those years ago. To Toby’s horror, his little film has had a terrible effect on the sleepy village; Angelica, the young girl who was innocence personified, now works as a high class call-girl, and the old man who played Quixote has now gone completely mad, believing he really is the ‘Knight of the Mournful Countenance’. A series of accidents leads to a fire that threatens to destroy the village. The police come for Toby, but he is ‘rescued’ by the deluded old man, who, mistaking him for his loyal squire Sancho, leads Toby away into the countryside on the quest for his perfect lady, Dulcinea. On their quest, Toby comes face to face with demons, both real and imagined, modern and medieval. Damsels are rescued, jousts are fought, giants are slain and women have beards! Reality and fantasy blur on this bizarre road trip which leads to a phantasmagorical finale.

Gilliam entered into pre-production on his first attempt at The Man Who Killed Don Quixote two decades ago, getting the project in front of cameras with French actor Jean Rochefort as Quixote and Johnny Depp as Toby Grisoni in 2000. But the production was plagued by numerous issues – chronicled in the heartbreaking documentary Lost In LaMancha – and shut down within a week never to resume with that cast. Over the years, Gilliam reworked the screenplay and came close to getting a greenlight with the various likes of Robert Duvall, Michael Palin and John Hurt as Quixote and Ewan McGregor and Jack O’Connell, as Grisoni.

And it was during one of those rounds of trying to secure the financing to remount the film where the seeds for the latest legal issue confronting Gilliam were planted.

In 2016 Gilliam and European producer Paulo Branco entered into an agreement where Branco would bankroll Gilliam for the production of the movie. While Gilliam would retain final cut on the film Branco would would own the rights to the film itself. However, after some tumultuous back-and-forths between Gilliam and Branco, Branco backed out of funding the the project, leaving Gilliam to go back to a task he was well familiar with – finding someone who would actually give him the money to produce The Man Who Killed Don Quixote.

But as the film has now actually been made, Branco contends that he owns the rights to it. Gilliam, on the other hand, disagrees, seeing as Branco never financed the actual production that resulted in the film. Without seeing the actual contract, it does seem like a pretty cut and dried case in Gilliam’s favor, but it still has to go before a court and a judgement is reportedly due on June 15. That is a date that would nix Gilliam’s plan to premier the film at Cannes a month earlier.

It’s hard not to feel bad for Gilliam. After struggling for twenty years to get the film finally made only to have the possibility of it all being ripped out of his hands just mere steps from the finish line has got to be an agonizing thing for him, no matter how meritless the case against him appears to be.

So, is it just me, or does any one else forget that there is a Deadpool 2 coming out? I mean, I know I shouldn’t, and whenever I remember, I get excited for it. But I kind of forget it.

If that happens to you, well, this new trailer for the film should fix that for you. The film gives us a better look at the plot – Cable (Josh Brolin) is hunting a young mutant (Julian Dennison) and Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds) chooses to protect the kid. Knowing what we know about Cable in the comics, we know that Cable has a pretty good reason for wanting the kid dead.

We also get to see a glimpse of X-Force, who are a team Deadpool puts together to take on Cable.

The trailer is below but, be warned, there is a whole bunch of salty language. And Air Supply.

Deadpool 2 opens on May 15th.

I don’t believe there is a doubt in anyone’s mind at this point that next month’s The Avengers: Infinity War is going to be a pretty massive epic in scale. So much of Marvel Studios storytelling is coming to head with the built up momentum of ten years of films behind it.

And yet…

This is just the middle of Marvel’s Phase Three cycle of films. We still have Ant-Man And The Wasp later this year, Captain Marvel early next year and finally another, still untitled Avengers film to cap things off this time next year. What does Marvel have in store to top what we see being hinted at in this new trailer?

In the meantime, isn’t that meeting between Starlord. (Chris Pratt) and Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr) just everything it should be?

They say that juggling a career and family can be hard work. And judging from the first trailer for PIXAR’s upcoming Incredibles 2, it doesn’t get any easier if you have superpowers.

The film looks as if it is picking up pretty much from where the 2004 original ended. Bob and Helen Parr, aka Mr. Incredible (Craig T Nelson) and Elastigirl (Holly Hunter), have come out of their forced retirement to save their hometown and instilling in their children the ideals of being a superhero. But they soon find that it seems as if Elatigirl is more in demand for superheroing, leaving Bob to stay at home with the kids, just as baby Jack-Jack’s own unpredictable superpowers are starting to emerge.

Incredibles 2 also stars the voices of Sarah Vowell, Huck Milner, Samuel L. Jackson and Bob Odenkirk. It hits theaters June 15.

Venom film without Spider-Man would be your ordinary “man possessed by an alien” thriller. And a Venom teaser trailer that doesn’t show Venom isn’t much of a tease.

And that’s what we get. A trailer that makes it sure to let us know that it is set in San Francisco, just under 3,000 miles from Spider-Man’s home base of Queens, New York, shows us a hoodie wearing Tom Hardy walking the city’s streets while he attempts a tough guy American accent in the voice over, and Michelle Williams in a really bad wig.

But outside of some black, amorphous goo in a high-tech cylinder, we do not see the lead character at all. Granted, with the film eight months away, they might be still working on the CGI for the character, but the should have given us at least a peek at what it will look like, maybe a jump scare at the end of the trailer. Because not showing Hardy as Venom doesn’t make us want to see more, it makes us think that Sony is afraid to show us it.

Here’s the official studio synopsis, such as it is –

One of Marvel’s most enigmatic, complex and badass characters comes to the big screen, starring Academy Award® nominated actor Tom Hardy as the lethal protector Venom.

Venom opens in theaters October 5.

And I guess a good day for the rest of the folks around the country too.

The new clip offers up our first real look at Josh Brolin as Cable, a mutant from an apocalyptic future who travels back in time to screw up our favorite Merc with a Mouth’s day. And expectedly, the trailer has a bit of fun with the format.
