New Releases: February 27

Posted on 27 February 2009 by William Gatevackes

jonasbrothers_galleryposter1. Jonas Brothers: The 3D Concert Experience (Touchstone, 1,271 Theaters, 76 Minutes, Rated G): Yes, there is one juggernaut of a movie this week. One film that will rule the box office> Madea? She’s going to wish she is really is in jail? Jason? Sweating behind his hockey mask. Slumdog Millionaire? That Oscar will do you no good.

Yes, the overwhelming popularity of the tween audience will make these three quasi-talented brothers dominate the weekend box office, if the performance of  Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds is any indication.

If you are an adult, with no 12 year old daughters, this will mean nothing to you. But the Disney-riffic singers have the youth of this country whipped up into a frenzy. I don’t know why, I just hope the fad passes before my daughter enters her pre-teens.

street_fighter_the_legend_of_chun_li2. Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li (Fox, 1,136 Theaters, 96 Minutes, Rated PG-13): I just realized that this week has two films with pretty long titles. Man, this must wreak havoc with any theater that still has a marquee. I’d imagine they’re probably going to be running out of letters.

So, it’s gotten to the point that are doing franchise reboots of video game properties. I’m not a bible scholar, but I think that might be a sign of the apocalypse.

There is some differences from the 1994 Jean Claude Van Damme Street Fighter. This one seems less camptastic than that one. It also features a pretty intriguing cast, including one, honest to goodness Oscar nominee in the cast (although Michael Clarke Duncan might have just worn away all the luster from that fact by his post The Green Mile film choices). It also focuses on a select few characters from the video game, with Chun-Li, personified by Smallville‘s Kristin Kreuk, being the focus.

First Look At Gyllenhaal As PRINCE OF PERSIA

Posted on 12 August 2008 by Rich Drees

I don’t really play or follow video games, so the Prince of Persia franchise is a bit off my personal radar as is the upcoming movie adaptation starring Jake Gyllenhaal. When it comes to video games and movies I know two things. Video games make great documentaries (see The King Of Kong) but make not so great features (see Super Mario Brothers, Doom, Wing CommanderTomb Raider, BloodRayne, etc.).

Will Prince Of Persia: The Sands Of Time break that trend? While we’re waiting for its release in May 2010 to find out, Just Jared has scored the first pictures of Jake Gyllenhaal in costume in the titular role. I used to think of him as a skinny guy, but it looks like Gyllenhaal has hit the gym to pump up for the role a bit. However, in the shots at Just Jared Gyllenhaal looks more like a surfer dude than a warrior-prince out to save the world from whatever nastiness warrior-princes generally save the world from.

TUROK, SON OF STONE Heading To The Screen

Posted on 11 June 2008 by William Gatevackes

Certain critics of comic book movies criticize the fact that more and more little known, or “C-List,” characters are being adapted into movies. But just because the character isn’t well known in the mainstream, doesn’t mean that he doesn’t have fans. And one legendary comic book character is about to be adapted to the big screen by one of his biggest Hollywood fans.

Adam Beach, star of Flags of Our Fathers, HBO’s Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee, and, most recently, NBC’s Law and Order: Special Victims Unit, announced to MTV Movies Blog that he is set to star in a big screen, live-action adaptation of the classic Golden/Silver Age comic book character, Turok, Son of Stone.

If you are familiar with Turok at all, you probably know him from a series of successful video games from the 1990′s. But he actually first appeared in comic books 40 years before, in Gold Key Publishing’s Four Color Comics #596. From there, he moved on to his own very successful series which ran from 1956 to 1982. He has returned to comics in several series from various publishers since then.

Turok is a Native American who protects our universe from an alternate universe where dinosaurs still roam the Earth.

Beach, a descendant of Native Americans himself, said this about the character:

“He’s the first Native American superhero that I ever looked up to,” he
said. “He basically [comes from] a family where they’re protecting our universe
from an alternate universe that wants to take it over. He uses his wits, and his
might, and his special bow and arrow to take over the world.”

Beach provided the voice of Turok in a recent animated film.

PRINCE OF PERSIA Taking on a Definite SPIDER-MAN Feel

Posted on 03 June 2008 by William Gatevackes

Variety is announcing that Alfred Molina has joined the cast of Disney’s adaptation of Ubisoft’s popular video game franchise, Prince of Persia. His hiring has added to the general overall Spider-Man feel.

We all know that Molina portrayed the tortured villain Otto Octavius in 2004′s Spider-Man 2. But Jake Gyllenhaal, who previously signed as the lead in Prince of Persia, was set to step in for Tobey Maguire as Peter Parker/Spider-Man for that sequel if Maguire’s back problems kept him from that role.

Another member of Persia’s announced cast has a Spider-Man connection. Ben Kingsley was in negotiations to possibly play the Vulture in 2007′s Spider-Man 3. Early versions of the script featured the winged villain, but he never made the final cut.

We might never get a Spider-Man 4, but the spirit of the franchise lives on in Prince of Persia.
