In Remembrance: Harvey Bullock
Harvey Bullock,
the screenwriter of such 1960s comedies as Girl Happy (1965)
and With Six You Get Eggroll (1968), has passed away in
Laguna Beach, CA on April 23, 2006. He was 84.
Born on June 4,
1921 in Oxford, NC, Bullock graduated with a bachelors degree in
English from Duke University. While serving in the Navy during World
War II, Bullock was part of a counter-intelligence group that
created and transmitted fake radio messages designed to feed the
Nazis false information.
Bullock started
his career in television in 1960, writing scripts with writing
partner Ray Allen for the animated series The Flintstones and
the live-action series The Andy Griffith Show. They also
worked on the series The Jetsons and The Dick Van Dyke Show.
In 1964, the
pair had their first film produced- the rather tame sex farce
Honeymoon Hotel with Robert Goulet and Nancy Kwan. The following
year they wrote Girl Crazy for Elvis Presley. Their work on
The Flintstone’s television series landed Bullock and Allen
the job of developing the story for the cartoon’s translation to the
big screen with 1966’s The Man Called Flintstone. Bullock and
Allen also collaborated on the screenplays for Who’s Minding The
Mint? (1967), With Six You Get Eggroll (1968) and
Don’t Drink The Water (1969), which was adapted from the Woody
Allen play.
Bullock and
Allen continued their work in television, writing scripts for
Hogan’s Heroes and Alice. They pair also served as
executive producers of Love, American Style and created the
animated sit-com Wait Till Your Father Gets Home. After Allen
passed away in 1981, Bullock retired, though he did help co-write
the Andy Griffith Show television reunion special Return
To Mayberry in 1986. |
