Silent Film Mystery: A 50 foot strip
of a mid-1920s silent film is set to be the subject of an episode of
the PBS television series History Detectives. Discovered in a
Cincinnati, Ohio attic, the film was in a canister labeled
“Dangerous Hour- Eddie Polo.” Set in Arizona, Dangerous Hour
tells the story of a group of filmmakers who come to the aid of some
trapped miners. The film has been thought to be lost. The Library of
Congress Motion Picture Conservation Center at Wright-Patterson Air
Force Base in Dayton, Ohio supervised the research of the 38-second
film clip, but is keeping silent on their result until the episode
airs. The episode is not yet scheduled, but should air sometime over
the summer.
Deja View: Director Brad Anderson
has announced plans to develop an English language version of the
German political drama The Edukators. Anderson will both
script and direct the adaptation, moving the story’s action from
Berlin to the United States. . . The 2003 Takashi Miike film One
Last Call becomes the next Japanese horror film to be adapted
into English. French director Eric Valette will helm the project
while Andrew Klavan scripts. . . Constantine director Francis
Lawrence is set to helm I Am Legend, a remake of the Charlton
Heston film The Omega Man (1971), which in turn was a remake
of the Vincent Price vehicle The Last Man On Earth (1964).
All films are based on the Richard Matheson novel I Am Legend.
Will Smith is slated to star in this last version, which had been
originally developed for Arnold Schwarzenegger . . . First time
feature director Douglas Buck will be overseeing a remake of Brian
DePalma’s Sisters (1973) with Chloe Sevigny, Stephen Rea and
French actress Lou Doillon heading up the cast. Buck will also
co-script the adaptation with John Freitas.
Screen To Broadway: Mel Brooks is
hoping that lightening strikes twice. In this case, he’s hoping that
the creative lightening that made the Broadway adaptation of his
film The Producers a runaway hit will bring similar life to his 1974
comedy Young Frankenstein. Brooks has announced that he is
currently working on the score for a stage adaptation of his monster
comedy and will make a formal announcement seeking backers for the
project once he’s done writing the score.
