Kristin Wiig Says There Will Be No BRIDESMAIDS Sequel

In 2011, the female-fronted comedy Bridesmaids grossed over $288 million at the box office, and with a low price tag of $32.5 million it seemed as if doing a sequel would be a no-brainer. Well while the studio was certainly anxious to capitalize with a follow-up it was nothing that the film’s star and co-writer Kristen Wiig was interested in doing.

As she told Harper’s Bazaar, it was the idea to not do a sequel that was the no-brainer.

It wasn’t a hard decision. We knew during the first one, this was it. We would have made a lot of money if there was a second one, but that’s not my goal in my creative life.

As it doesn’t happen often, I have to admit that it is nice to see someone who is resistant to the idea of sequelizing everything they can. Bridesmaids was a solid and funny movie and I would rather see Wiig continue to explore different comic ideas for films. The release of Bridesmaids was heralded as the start of a wave of female-fronted comedies, but we haven’t seen that many in the meantime. Hopefully, Wiig’ll will continue with original films that will inspire other funny ladies out there.
