In just under three weeks, Star Wars: The Force Awakens has done what it took James Cameron’s Avatar nearly seven months to do – claim the number one spot as the top grossing film of all time in the US.
Yesterday’s box office estimates of $8 million edged The Force Awakens total US gross receipts to $758.2 million, a figure just shy of Avatar‘s theatrical lifetime gross of $760.5 million. With The Force Awakens undoubtedly earning more than the needed $2.3 million to pass Avatar‘s total, the only question remains is by how much will it break Avatar‘s record.
Avatar still holds the record for the film with the largest international box office gross at $2.78 billion. Currently, The Force Awakens has earned $1.56 billion, putting at a bit more than halfway to taking Avatar‘s crown. The film still has yet to open in China – It will do so this weekend – and that should provide a substantial bump to the continual robust overseas business that the film is doing.
Box office prognosticators had initially predicted that Star Wars would fall just short of knocking Avatar from its top spot on the international box office chart, estimating an ultimate gross of somewhere between $2.2 and $2.4 billion. It remains to be seen if those estimates will hold or if The Force Awakens will blast pass them as well.
