DC FanDome: James Gunn Reveals His SUICIDE SQUAD

Ever since it was announced, fans have been wondering which of DC villians would round out the roster of director James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad. Part a sequel to the 2016 DC Extended Universe film Suicide Squad, part franchise reboot, the film sees the return of a handful of characters who have been joined by a number of actors that the publicity has been coy about identifying in specific roles.

That speculation was ended today as Gunn unveiled his Suicide Squad lineup during today’s DC FanDome streaming event. Coming into the franchise are John Cena as Peacemaker, Pete Davidson as Black Guard, Michael Rooker as Savant, Sean Gunn as Weasel, Idris Elba as Bloodsport, Peter Capaldi as The Thinker, David Dastmalchian as Polka Dot Man, Daniela Malchior as Ratcatcher 2, Flula Borg as Javelin, Nathan Fillion as T.D.K., aka The Detachable Kid, Mayling Ng as Mongal and Alice Braga as Sulsoria.

They join returning 2016 Suicide Squad vets Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang, Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flagg and Viola Davis as Amanda Waller.

The only role not revealed is that of the voice of the half-fuman half-shark King Shark. But given that rumors have placed actor/director Taiki Waititi in the cast, it is possible that he is voicing the CG character.

A majority of the panel consisted of Gunn and his cast choosing up teams and engaging in a raucous trivia contest that seemed more entertaining to them than perhaps it was to watch.

But Gunn did offer two bits of video. The first was a short roll call of the cast showcasing their rather colorful costumes, outfits that come as a stark contrast to most of the more grounded, darker and realistic costumes of the rest of the DCEU. The second video is a behind-the-scenes look at the production of the film, which Gunn describes as a “gritty 70s war movie.” How that melds with the costumes remains to be seen.

The Suicide Squad opens August 6, 2021.
