As we countdown to next weekend’s release of the teaser trailer for Frank Miller’s upcoming adaptation of the comic hero The Spirit, Lionsgate has released two cast photos from the film. They feature Samuel L. Jackson as The Spirit’s nemesis, the criminal mastermind known only as The Octopus and the jewel thief and femme fatale Silken Floss, as embodied by Scarlett Johansson.
Johansson is a great bit of casting because Miller is definitely going for a retro aesthetic with the film and Johansson’s features recall the look of the glamour queens of Hollywood’s Golden Age.
While Jackson has yet to turn in a disappointing performance, I have to admit that I’m a bit perplexed by the picture. In the classic Spirit strip, The Octopus was never shown, except for his distinctively gloved hands. Thinking Miller would preserve this, I was impressed with Jackson’s casting and looking forward to him carrying the role through primarily a vocal performance. However, it looks as if Miller has something different, and dare I say it, a bit more conventional, in mind.
