HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL 3 Leads List Of Original Song Oscar Hopefuls

Not surprisingly, the Disney pre-teen musical hit High School Musical 3 leads the list of the 49 songs eligible for Oscar consideration. Eleven of the film’s tunes are up for consideration for the five slots that will appear on the Academy Awards ballot for Best Original Song.

The Academy announced the list of songs today.

The cult film Repo! The Genetic Opera had the next highest number of nominee-eligible songs with three.

I have to admit that my musical tastes are a bit deviated from the pop culture norm and from how the Academy votes every year. It is hard for me to get too excited about the potential nominees, as the songs I generally like usually don’t make the cut.

But wouldn’t it be interesting if Hamlet 2‘s “Rock Me Sexy Jesus” made the list? The last time a truely funny song made the list of five nominees was in 2000 when “Blame Canada” from South Park: Bigger, Longer, Uncut was up for the Oscar. When it came time to present the song on the Awards show, it was sung by Robin Williams and featured one of the best production numbers the show has seen in years. I would love to see what they would come up with for “Rock Me Sexy Jesus.”

The complete list of nominees is as follows-

  • “Another Way to Die” from Quantum of Solace
  • “Barking at the Moon” from Bolt
  • “The Boys Are Back” from High School Musical 3: Senior Year
