Last month, production started in a live action feature film version of the classic Japanese anime series Space Battleship Yamato, or Star Blazers as it is known to American audiences. But while fans of the series wait for its release next December, they’ll have another animated Space Battleship Yamato adventure to enjoy on the big screen when Space Battleship Yamato: Rebirth Chapter hits Japanese movie theaters this December.
The original Space Battleship Yamato television series spawned two sequel series and numerous feature film spinoffs. Rebirth Chapter takes place 17 years after the events of the final Yamato feature film, 1983’s Space Battleship Yamato: The Final Chapter. In this new film, Earth is threatened by an expanding black hole. When the evacuation of the planet is attacked, it is up to the crew of the Yamato, led by Captain Susumu Kodai (or Derek Wildstar to American audiences) to spring to their defense.
Two Japanese trailers have shown up online for the upcoming film. I have to admit, hearing the more militant version of the classic Yamato/ Star Blazers theme in the opening moments of the first trailer gave me a wave of nostalgia for the time in my youth when my friends would gather to watch the series as part of a programming block of Japanese import shows which included the likes of UltraMan, Speed Racer, The Space Giants and others.
