SDCC 17: Ready For Another GHOSTBUSTERS Film In 2019?

Despite mixed reviews and poor box office for its 2016 reboot, the Ghostbusters franchise is still open for business.

So says producer Ivan Reitman. Speaking at a panel celebrating all things related to the franchise, Reitman stated that there are still a number of Ghostbusters projects in development and that they hope to have one ready for the summer of 2019 to mark the 35th anniversary of the release of the original film.

Well, the studio is working on some really nice things. First of all, I can’t believe the movie is still playing and being watched so assiduously… and I can’t believe I’m so old. Yeah, I think there’s going to be a lot of fun, a lot of special things. We’re going to try to tie one of our films close to that date.

Reitman has mentioned before how he has been working with the studio on developing a number of Ghostbusters projects. These include a new film featuring a different team of paranormal exterminators, which may or may not was going to be a spinoff from the 2016 film and an animated feature.

Reitman cagily did not address which actual potential project we could be seeing in two years. That could be because they don’t know which one they are going to be going forward with. Whichever one it is, though, we should probably expect to hear more details by the end of the year. Unless this is so much vaporware on Reitman’s part.

One thing is probably for sure in that we won’t likely being seeing the return of Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones for this new movie.
