SDCC ’17: First READY PLAYER ONE Trailer Immerses You In VR World

Fans of Ernie Kline’s novel Ready Player One got their first look at Steven Spielberg’s adaptation of it today at San Diego Comic Con as the first trailer for the films was unveiled. Just like the novel, the movie appears to be chock full of references to 1980s and `90s pop culture. But it looks like it will be more than just a cavalcade of those decades’ greatest hits. The story looks solidly Spielbergian with its story of a young man yearning for an adventure that will take him away from life as he’s known it. And how about that Willy Wonka music cue at the beginning?

Here’s the official studio synopsis –

The film is set in 2045, with the world on the brink of chaos and collapse. But the people have found salvation in the OASIS, an expansive virtual reality universe created by the brilliant and eccentric James Halliday (Mark Rylance). When Halliday dies, he leaves his immense fortune to the first person to find a digital Easter egg he has hidden somewhere in the OASIS, sparking a contest that grips the entire world. When an unlikely young hero named Wade Watts (Tye Sheridan) decides to join the contest, he is hurled into a breakneck, reality-bending treasure hunt through a fantastical universe of mystery, discovery and danger.

Ready Player One stars Tye Sheridan, Olivia Cooke, Ben Mendelsohn, T.J. Miller, Simon Pegg and Mark Rylance and hits theaters on March 30, 2018.
