Academy Names 20 Visual Effects Oscar Shortlist Candidates

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced the twenty films who made it through the first round of consideration for the Academy Awards’ Best Visual Effects category. Expectedly, among the contenders in the category including a number of blockbuster films and superhero movies.

This is just the first step of a three step process that comprises the process potential nominees go through for the Visual Effects category. From here, a shortlist of the films will be determined and then announced by the Visual Effects Branch Executive Committee later this month. Another round of voting will winnow the list down to the five nominees that the entire Academy will vote on for the Oscar.

The 90th Academy Awards take place March 4.
