It looks like it is a busy week the casting office for Marvel’s upcoming Secret Invasion series for Disney+.
Yesterday came news that Academy winner Olivia Colman was in negotiations to appear on the streaming TV series. And now comes word, via Variety, that Game Of Thrones‘s Mother of Dragons, Emilia Clarke is also in “final negotiations” to appear in the series.
As per usual, Disney and Marvel are not commenting and there is no word as about Clarke’s character for the show.
Marvel is set to start filming the series this coming fall in the United Kingdom and Europe. Mr. Robot‘s Kyle Bradstreet is writing and executive producing the series.
There is not much known about Secret Invasion, the series. It will most likely be drawing inspiration from the 2008 comic book event which saw the shapeshifting alien Skrulls attempt to take over Earth by kidnapping and replacing a number of superheroes. The show was initially announced last year with MCU mainstay Samuel L Jackson appearing as spy master Nick Fury and Ben Mendelsohn as the sympathetic Skrull Talos, first introduced in the 2019 Captain Marvel film. It was later reported that Kingsley Ben-Adir had been cast as the series’ unnamed main villain.
But since many of the Disney+ series and the theatrical movies will have plot threads that weave back and forth, we may have already seen some hints that point towards Secret Invasion. At the end of 2019’s Spider-Man: Far From Home we see that Talos has been on Earth impersonating Nick Fury at the request of Fury, who is out in space with some other Skrulls doing… something left unexplained.
Earlier this year, at the end of the Disney+ WandaVision series we saw Monica Rambeau, who just received superpowers in that series, being invited to meet with Fury by an unnamed Skrull. That at least suggests she could appear in Secret invasion, though no announcement has been made yet. Monica Rambeau actress Teyonah Parris has previously been announced as appearing in Captain Marvel 2, which is slated for a November 2022 release. However, since we don’t have a release date for Secret Invasion, we can’t say whether or not the Disney+ series and Captain Marvel 2 share some plot points.
