It&#8217;s not like the film&#8217;s story was based on pre-existing material in the form of a comic book short story, novel or other such work we normally connect with the category.<\/p>\n<p>In response to numerous questions about the nomination, <strong>Toy Story 3<\/strong>&#8216;s director Lee Unkrich took to <a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/#!\/leeunkrich\" target=\"_blank\">twitter<\/a> and offered up this explanation.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.filmbuffonline.com\/FBOLNewsreel\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/UnkirchTS3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11610\" title=\"UnkirchTS3\" src=\"http:\/\/www.filmbuffonline.com\/FBOLNewsreel\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/UnkirchTS3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"540\" height=\"259\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.filmbuffonline.com\/FBOLNewsreel\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/UnkirchTS3.jpg 540w, https:\/\/www.filmbuffonline.com\/FBOLNewsreel\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/UnkirchTS3-300x144.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px\" \/><\/a>Fair enough. And while the reasoning is certainly sound, a review of the Motion Picture Academy of Arts and Sciences rules doesn&#8217;t actually present any clear definitions as to what qualifies for either writing category.
