{"id":126,"date":"2007-10-30T16:30:00","date_gmt":"2007-10-30T20:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.filmbuffonline.com\/FBOLNewsreel\/wordpress\/?p=126"},"modified":"2018-12-08T15:03:55","modified_gmt":"2018-12-08T20:03:55","slug":"toho-returns-to-kurosawas-hidden-fortress","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.filmbuffonline.com\/FBOLNewsreel\/wordpress\/2007\/10\/30\/toho-returns-to-kurosawas-hidden-fortress\/","title":{"rendered":"Toho Returns To Kurosawa&#8217;s HIDDEN FORTRESS"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Cameras start rolling later this week on a remake of Akira Kurosawa&#8217;s classic film <strong>The Hidden Fortress<\/strong>, according to an announcement from in today&#8217;s <em>Variety<\/em> from Japan&#8217;s Toho Studios.<\/p>\n<p>The remake&#8217;s director, Shinji Higuchi, comes from a background in visual effects and has already the directed the hit films <strong>Lorelei<\/strong> (2005)and <strong>The Sinking Of Japan <\/strong>(2006). Taking over original star Toshiro Mifune&#8217;s role of a general guiding a rescued princess through enemy territories is Hiroshi Abe, an actor who has been mostly known for roles in romantic comedies. Masami Nagasawa will be playing the princess, a role played by Misa Uehara in the original.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, I could be snarky and say that <strong>Hidden Fortress<\/strong> has been remade once before- it was called <strong>Star Wars <\/strong>(1977). It&#8217;s fairly well known that Lucas patterned his original film off of Kurosawa&#8217;s story before filtering it through an odd combination of Joseph Campbell and <strong>Buck Rogers<\/strong> serials, causing such characters as the two bumbling peasants who accompany the general in <strong>Hidden Fortress<\/strong> to transform into <strong>Star Wars<\/strong>&#8216; robots R2-Ds and C-3P0.
