And I have to say that I’m a bit underwhelmed. You can read the complete press release below, but let’s bullet point a few things.

Each film will be getting a 1080p transfer, a 6.1 audio mix and two commentary tracks. The participants on each commentary are as follows –

The Phantom Menace: George Lucas, Rick McCallum, Ben Burtt, Rob
Coleman, John Knoll, Dennis Muren and Scott Squires

Attack Of The Clones: George Lucas, Rick McCallum, Ben Burtt, Rob
Coleman, Pablo Helman, John Knoll and Ben Snow

Revenge Of The Sith: George Lucas, Rick McCallum, Rob Coleman, John Knoll
and Roger Guyett

Star Wars: George Lucas, Carrie Fisher, Ben Burtt and Dennis Muren

The Empire Strikes Back: George Lucas, Irvin Kershner, Carrie Fisher, Ben
Burtt and Dennis Muren

Return Of The Jedi: George Lucas, Carrie Fisher, Ben Burtt and Dennis Muren

Discs seven and eight will be devoted to deleted/extended/alternate scenes, additional cast/crew interviews, as well as concept art and matte paintings and looks at those films’ props, costumes and maquettes. One disc will be devoted to each trilogy.

Disc nine will contain several documentaries and vintage television specials including the three “Making of specials released in conjunction with the three original films, a retrospective look at The Empire Strikes Back on the occasion of its 30* anniversary, the 2007 Science Channel special “Star Wars Tech,” and more. And don’t hold your breath, because the Star Wars Holiday Special isn’t included. (Like it ever would be.)

While they don’t specifically say “Special Edition,” I certainly doubt that Lucas is going to give us the unaltered, theatrical cuts. It was only with seeming great reluctance that they ever made an appearance on DVD and I doubt that Lucas would want to expend the energy to give them a decent high-def transfer. The DVD transfer was barely an improvement over the laserdisc release from the 1990s. It’s a shame that Lucas continues with his historical revisionism in this regard. I’ve written at length as to why I think that the original theatrical versions of the trilogy shouldn’t be hidden away from public access, but I won’t get into it again.

The commentary tracks look like they could be interesting, although with Lucas’ “yes-man” McCallum on the prequel trilogy, I’ll be taking what I hear said there with a grain of salt. Carrie Fisher should provide some lively comments on the original trilogy commentaries, though I wish she was also contributing to the prequel films she did some uncredited script polishing on.

What will really get me interested in the set will be the contents of the original trilogy disc devoted to deleted scenes, etc. Hopefully, this is not just going to be a porting over material that was already presented as DVD special features, but that there will be new material as well. There is a lot of material in the Lucasfilm vaults and hopefully they’re digging deep to provide some interesting things for fans. There have been a lot of good and comprehensive fan documentaries floating around the internet that have made use of the material we’ve had access to for years. They’re going to have to work hard to give us something that excels what we’ve seen so far.

Also, I’m not sure I’m all too keen on the cover art for the individual trilogies. They seem a bit busy and cluttered fro something as small as blu-ray packaging.

Here’s the initial press release –

Bring home the adventure and share Star Wars™ with your whole family – when STAR WARS: THE COMPLETE SAGA comes to Blu-ray Disc from Lucasfilm Ltd. and Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment!
