Columbia Pictures has signed The Dark Knight<\/strong> co-star Aaron Eckhart to star in their big budget science-fiction\/action picture Battle: Los Angeles<\/strong>. Eckhart will play the leader of a platoon of Marines battling an alien invasion in downtown LA.<\/p>\n

Director Jonathan Liebesman describes the film as \u201cIndependence Day<\/strong> meets Black Hawk Down<\/strong>,\u201d which certainly sounds intriguing. It has been a long time since we\u2019ve seen a hardcore, grunt\u2019s-eye point-of-view, science-fiction war film like Aliens<\/strong> or Starship Troopers<\/strong>. However, Liebesman is the director of Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning<\/strong> and Darkness Falls<\/strong>, so there is cause to be only cautiously optimistic about this film.<\/p>\n

Also, while I like Eckhart as an actor, he does have a mixed track record when it comes to picking projects. For every Dark Knight<\/strong> or Thank You For Smoking <\/strong>on his resume, there\u2019s a The Core<\/strong> or No Reservations<\/strong>. Plus there\u2019s that whole separated-at-birth thing he has going with Scott Bakula which sort of freaks me out at times.<\/p>\n
