\"\"<\/a>For much of the same reasons that Hollywood continually remakes movies – the built-in name brand recognition makes it easier to market the product – Broadway has turned to adapting films for the stage. In the past few years we’ve seen Monty Python And The Holy Grail<\/strong>, The Color Purple<\/strong>, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels<\/strong>, Sister Act<\/strong>, Priscilla Queen Of The Desert<\/strong> and The Lion King<\/strong> make the jump from the big screen to the footlights, to name just a few.<\/p>\n

So how about blaxploitation classic Superfly<\/strong>?<\/p>\n

The New York Times<\/em><\/a> reported over the weekend that Bill T. Jones, who has won Tony awards for Spring Awakening<\/strong> and Fela!<\/em>, is spending three weeks in New York next month working on the project in presumably a workshop environment. The show features a book by Seth Zvi Rosenfeld, whose play A Brother’s Kiss<\/em> was adapted to film in 1997, and music by \u201970s-era soul, funk and R&B artists, including Curtis Mayfield, who recorded the original film\u2019s famed soundtrack. The soundtrack is one of the very few to out-gross the film that spawned it.<\/p>\n

This is the second time that material from the proposed show has been workshopped. Previously, Justin Guarini (Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown<\/em>) contributed during that session.<\/p>\n

Reportedly, there is a casting session going on today for the role of Georgia, ” a 20-something beauty with a fabulous voice who can match the ‘sexuality, fearlessness, and heart’ of Priest, the college-educated cocaine dealer at the center of the show.”<\/p>\n
