\"\"<\/a>The Artist<\/strong> and Hugo<\/strong> were the big winners at tonight\u2019s Academy Awards, with each film picking up five Oscar statues each. The Artist<\/strong> took home the big prizes of Best Picture Director and Actor while Hugo<\/strong>\u2019s awards were primarily in the technical categories. The two films were heavily favored going into the annual awards with Hugo<\/strong> sporting nominations in 11 categories while The Artist<\/strong> had nominations in 10.<\/p>\n

At 82, Christopher Plummer became the oldest Oscar recipient when he won the Best Supporting Actor for his performance in Beginners<\/strong>. As he said in his acceptance speech to the Oscar statue just handed to him, \u201cYou\u2019re only two years older than me darling. Where have you been all my life?\u201d<\/p>\n

Seemingly perennial nominee Meryl Streep won her third Academy Award for her portrayal of Margaret Thatcher, the first woman Prime Minister of England in The Iron Lady<\/strong>. Although she self-effacingly stated when accepting her statue that she could hear half of America saying \u201c\u2019Oh no, not her again,\u2019\u201d it has been three decades since she last won for 1981’s Sophie\u2019s Choice<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
