\"\"<\/a>Regal Cinemas is the first theater chain in the US to announce that they will be screening Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey<\/strong> in the new high-definition digital projection format of 48-frames-per-second. This will also be the general public’s first chance to see a film in this format and decide if it lives up to the hype that the likes of Jackson and James Cameron have been giving to the process.<\/p>\n

For the unfamiliar, the 48 frames-per-second rate of photographing and projecting a film is double the century long-time industry standard of 24 frames-per-second. The increased frame rate will presumably allow for a sharper, more natural-looking picture that would be free of flicker and the motion blur that can sometimes be detected in the current format.<\/p>\n

According to Regal’s website, the film will still be available to screen in 2D, standard project rate 3D and Imax formats at various locations as well.<\/p>\n

Please note that this is just the first theater chain to announce their higher frame rate locations. Don’t despair if there isn’t a location close to you on the list below. More thaters are sure to follow.<\/p>\n
