Now, it\u2019s time to face the music, and see how well we did. There have been a lot of surprises in the nominees,\u00a0 and the surprises were puzzling. Let\u2019s see how we fared against our predictions, then we\u2019ll comment on\u00a0surprises in other categories that we didn\u2019t talk about on Tuesday. Let\u2019s start with Best Actor:<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Performance by an actor in a leading role-<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Daniel Day Lewis, <strong>Lincoln<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Denzel Washington, <strong>Flight<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Hugh Jackman, <strong>Les Miserables<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Bradley Cooper, <strong>Silver Linings Playbook<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Joaquin Phoenix, <strong>The Master<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Number of Nominations We \u201cCalled\u201d: \u00a0<\/strong>4.5 out of 5<\/p>\n<p><strong>We Say:\u00a0<\/strong>I&#8217;m taking .5 off because while I did say Cooper&#8217;s nomination was a possibility, I though John Hawkes or Richard Gere would get in instead of him. But, inexplicably, the voters seem to really love\u00a0<strong>Silver Linings Playbook<\/strong>, therefore Cooper is one of many nominations that got in because of that lovefest.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Performance by an actor in a supporting role-<\/strong><\/h2>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li>Christoph Waltz, <strong>Django Unchained<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Philip Seymour Hoffman, <strong>The Master<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Robert De Niro, <strong>Silver Linings Playbook<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Alan Arkin, <strong>Argo<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Tommy Lee Jones, <strong>Lincoln<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong>Number of Nominations We \u201cCalled\u201d:<\/strong>\u00a05 out of 5.<\/p>\n<p><strong>We say:<\/strong>\u00a0See, we told you Alan Arkin was a lock for a nomination! But, then again, the category was relatively easy to predict. As Stone and MacFarlane snarkily pointed out while reading the nominations, every nominee already has at least one Oscar.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Performance by an actress in a leading role-<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Naomi Watts, <strong>The Impossible<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Jessica Chastain, <strong>Zero Dark Thirty<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Jennifer Lawrence, <strong>Silver Linings Playbook<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Emmanuelle Riva, <strong>Amour<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Quvenzhan\u00e9 Wallis, <strong>Beasts of the Southern Wild<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Number of Nominations We \u201cCalled\u201d: \u00a0<\/strong>5\u00a0out of 5<\/p>\n<p><strong>We say:<\/strong>\u00a0Another very predictable category, with all the most deserving performances getting a nomination. A bit of Oscar history as we have our oldest nominee ever (Riva) and youngest nominee ever (Wallis) facing off against each other.<\/p>\n<div>\n<h2><strong>Performance by an actress in a supporting role-<\/strong><\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<ul>\n<li>Sally Field, <strong>Lincoln<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Anne Hathaway, <strong>Les Miserables<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Jacki Weaver, <strong>Silver Linings Playbook<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Helen Hunt, <strong>The Sessions<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Amy Adams, <strong>The Master<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Number of Nominations We \u201cCalled\u201d: <\/strong>\u00a04\u00a0out of 5<\/p>\n<p><strong>We Say:<\/strong>\u00a0We have to stop underestimating the Academy&#8217;s love for Jacki Weaver. Also, their appreciation of the underwhelming\u00a0<strong>Silver Linings Playbook<\/strong>, which seems to have willed itself into being an Oscar powerhouse through savvy promotion alone (it was a good movie, but not a great movie). Maybe they made a deal with the Academy that they would buy 500 ads on Good Morning America during the Oscar Nomination announcements in exchange for getting a lot of nods. And Hunt getting a nomination while Hawkes gets snubbed just seems wrong on many levels.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Achievement in directing-<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>David O. Russell, <strong>Silver Linings Playbook<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Ang Lee, <strong>Life of Pi<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Steven Spielberg, <strong>Lincoln<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Michael Haneke, <strong>Amour<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Benh Zeitlin, <strong>Beasts of the Southern Wild<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Number of Nominations We \u201cCalled\u201d:\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>3 out of 5<\/p>\n<div><strong>We say:\u00a0<\/strong>No Affleck, no Bigelow, no Hooper. All three got DGA nods. All three were odds on favorites for a nomination. And they get bupkis. This is completely unfathomable. Granted, it&#8217;s good to see Haneke and Zeitlin get nominations, but that means Spielberg and Russell are taking Affleck&#8217;s and Bigelow&#8217;s spots. There I said it.\u00a0<strong>Lincoln\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>Silver Lining Playbook\u00a0<\/strong>were good, but not extraordinary movies. And the work Affleck and Bigelow did is far more deserving than pretty much any one else on the list. I just can&#8217;t understand it. But without Affleck and Bigelow in the mix, the race is wide open.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<h2><strong>Best motion picture of the year-<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Beasts of the Southern Wild<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Silver Linings Playbook<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Zero Dark Thirty<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Lincoln<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Les Miserables<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Life of Pi<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Amour<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Django Unchained<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Argo<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Number of Nominations We \u201cCalled\u201d:\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>It\u2019s hard to calculate, but we mentioned 9 out of the 9.<\/p>\n<p><strong>We say:<\/strong>\u00a0I find it ironic that in the two years since the Academy changed the rules for the number of nominees from ten to anywhere between five and ten because \u00a0there were not enough strong nominees, there have been 9 nominees each year. And this year, it could have very well been ten. I think\u00a0<strong>Brave\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>Moonrise Kingdom\u00a0<\/strong>had as much call to be nominated as some of the films that did get nominated.<\/p>\n<h2>Other surprises:<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>I have to say, and this might get me in trouble with my boss here at FBOL, but I could have done with out the snark from Seth MacFarlane during the nominations. I just didn&#8217;t find it all that funny. And Emma Stone looked like she was hoping that a SWAT team would bust into the room and rescue her.<\/li>\n<li>That being said, it looked like MacFarlane&#8217;s reaction to being nominated for Best Original Song was sincere. That certainly will put an interesting spin on the proceedings.<\/li>\n<li>Considering how screwed up the nomination process for Best Documentary\u00a0is\u00a0each year,\u00a0<strong>Searching for Sugar Man\u00a0<\/strong>even getting on the short list was a great accomplishment. It making its way to an actual nomination is something close to a miracle. Not because it doesn&#8217;t deserve to be there, but because it does. So does\u00a0<strong>Bully,\u00a0<\/strong>but that didn&#8217;t get a nomination. At least it made it to the short list.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The Avengers\u00a0<\/strong>is up for\u00a0Best Achievement in Visual Effects.
