As we all know, the nominations have just been released. How did we do?\u00a0 Well, let&#8217;s find out. And the nominees are&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Performance by an actor in a leading role-<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Richard Jenkins in <strong>The Visitor<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Frank Langella in <strong>Frost\/Nixon<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Sean Penn in <strong>Milk <\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Brad Pitt in <strong>The Curious Case of Benjamin Button<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Mickey Rourke in <strong>The Wrestler<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Number of Nominations We &#8220;Called&#8221;:<\/span> \u00a0<\/strong>4 out of 5<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">The One We Didn&#8217;t:<\/span><\/strong>Do we get any credit for saying the academy might snub Leonardo DiCaprio? No, because Richard Jenkins should have been a no brainer. His performance was one of the most critically acclaimed of the year. This is what Jenkins had to say about the nomination:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"EC_Section1\">\n<p class=\"EC_MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size: x-small; font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial;\">\u201cThis nomination is such an unexpected honor and I am grateful to the Academy for the recognition. I\u2019ve been awed by the work of my fellow nominees this year and am truly humbled to be in their company. Having been an actor for many years now, I am moved by the fact that something like this can happen at this point in my career, particularly for a film that has meant so much to me.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"EC_MsoNormal\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"EC_MsoNormal\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: x-small; font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold; font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial;\">Richard Jenkins, THE VISITOR<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Performance by an actor in a supporting role-<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"EC_Section1\">\n<ul>\n<li>Josh Brolin in <strong>Milk<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Robert Downey Jr. in <strong>Tropic Thunder<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Philip Seymour Hoffman in <strong>Doubt<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Heath Ledger in <strong>The Dark Knight<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Michael Shannon in <strong>Revolutionary Road<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Number of Nominations We &#8220;Called&#8221;:<\/span><\/strong> 4 out of 5.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">The One We Didn&#8217;t:<\/span><\/strong> Nobody from <strong>Frost\/Nixon <\/strong>got the call. Strangely, this was the only acting nod <strong>Revolutionary Road <\/strong>received. Shannon got good notices for his role, but was he the most deserving of the cast?<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Performance by an actress in a leading role-<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Anne Hathaway in <strong>Rachel Getting Married<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Angelina Jolie in <strong>Changeling<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Melissa Leo in <strong>Frozen River<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Meryl Streep in\u00a0<strong><\/strong><strong>Doubt<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Kate Winslet in <strong>The Reader<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Number of Nominations We &#8220;Called&#8221;:<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>3.5 out of 5<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">The One Point Five \u00a0We Didn&#8217;t:<\/span><\/strong> We are taking partial credit for Kate Winslet. We predicted she would be nominated and that her role in <strong>The Reader <\/strong>should be lead. I think that should be good enough for a .5. Leo, like Jenkins, was an early year, yet still worthy performance that we goofed on not including. Althought ignoring Sally Hawkins was a major snub.<\/p>\n<p>This is what Kate Winslet said on her nomination for <strong>The Reader<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<div class=\"EC_Section1\">\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"EC_MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size: x-small; font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial;\">\u201cI&#8217;m extremely happy to have been nominated. And very fortunate. Playing Hanna Schmitz will always remain one of the biggest challenges I&#8217;ve ever been blessed with. I&#8217;m genuinely thrilled not just for myself but for the wonderful Stephen Daldry and David Hare. These nominations are a testament to their unwavering commitment to this film. And I&#8217;m also very happy for all the people in Germany whose hard work on THE READER, has been rewarded by these nominations. Henson in <strong>The Curious Case of Benjamin Button<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Marisa Tomei in <strong>The Wrestler<\/strong>\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Number of Nominations We &#8220;Called&#8221;:<\/span> \u00a0<\/strong>4 out of 5<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">The One We Didn&#8217;t:<\/span><\/strong> We were going to list Henson, but the Oscar&#8217;s not following the Golden Globes&#8217; lead on putting Winslet in this category through us off. Yeah, yeah, that&#8217;s what happened.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Achievement in directing-<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>The Curious Case of Benjamin Button<\/strong>, David Fincher<\/li>\n<li><strong>Frost\/Nixon<\/strong>, Ron Howard<\/li>\n<li><strong>Milk<\/strong>, Gus Van Sant<\/li>\n<li><strong>The Reader<\/strong>, Stephen Daldry<\/li>\n<li><strong>Slumdog Millionaire<\/strong>, Danny Boyle<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Number of Nominations We &#8220;Called&#8221;:<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>5 out of 5<\/div>\n<div><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Woo Hoo!!!:\u00a0<\/span> <\/strong>Yes, we did think that Mike Leigh was &#8220;Almost Certain&#8221; to get a nod for <strong>Happy-Go-Lucky<\/strong>. But I guess the Academy didn&#8217;t like that film as much as the rest of the world did. But we said that all the nomininated directors had a shot. So, we are calling that a victory.<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><\/strong><\/span><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Best motion picture of the year-<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>The Curious Case of Benjamin Button<\/strong><strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Frost\/Nixon<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Milk<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>The Reader<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Slumdog Millionaire<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Number of Nominations We &#8220;Called&#8221;:<\/span> \u00a0<\/strong>4 out of 5<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">The One We Didn&#8217;t:<\/span><\/strong> In what is becoming a rare occurance, the Best Picture nominations match up with the Best Director nominations. This means that <strong>The Reader <\/strong>gets the nod over <strong>Revolutionary Road<\/strong>. And, yes, <strong>The Dark Knight <\/strong>and <strong>Wall-E <\/strong>too. But the Best Animated Film was created so the &#8220;real film&#8221; don&#8217;t have to mingle with the animated riff raff. And, really. A comic book movie?
