When TRON: Legacy<\/strong> ended, it did so on a rather intriguing note. The program Quorra, in the form of Olivia Wilde, had been brought out of the cyberspace world of the System into the real world, the opposite of the franchise’s basic premise of people traveling into the digital realm inside a computer. Unfortunately, the film’s box office returns were a bit below what Disney was hoping for and it looked questionable if there was going to be a followup that explored the story potential implied by the ending of the second. But while they weighed their options, Disney did go ahead and hired a screenwriter<\/a> to begin developing that story with director Joseph Kosinski.<\/p>\n

This weekend at WonderCon in Anaheim, Kosinski gave an update to Collider<\/a> about where things stand in the writing process –<\/p>\n

Question: Does it feel like there really will be another TRON and that Disney wants that to happen?<\/p>\n

JOSEPH KOSINSKI: Yeah, it absolutely does. I think I\u2019m two weeks away from getting the draft. This is a story we\u2019ve been working on since 2009, so that\u2019s four years now. I\u2019m really excited about the idea that we have for it. I think it delivers on the promise that both TRON movies have made. It opens the movie up, in a way that I think is going to give it a much broader appeal. Whereas TRON really, ultimately, in the end, catered most to TRON fans, this idea broadens it some more, in really exciting ways. But, it\u2019s all about the script and making sure that that story is compelling enough to get all of us back together. Those movies are hard to make. It\u2019s a two-and-a-half to three-year journey. So, to go back in there and go back to the Grid, it\u2019s going to have to be a pretty spectacular script. We\u2019ve got a great writer on it, so we\u2019ll see.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

It does sound that while he is trying to be upbeat about a third TRON film happening, Kosinski is trying to manage expectations and let fans know that it is still not clear that a third film is definitely going to happen. Here’s hoping that Disney decides to take the gamble on it.<\/p>\n
