Night Shyamalan created the 2000 thriller <strong>Unbreakable<\/strong>, he envisioned it as the first part of a trilogy about an ordinary man, played by Bruce Willis, who discovers that he has extraordinary powers. Unfortunately, he was never able to continue telling that story past the first film. But that hasn&#8217;t stopped Shyamalan from talking about continuing and not surprisingly now that he is doing the publicity rounds for his latest film <strong>After Earth<\/strong> it has come up in discussions again.<\/p>\n<p>The topic first came up with <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20160101134958\/http:\/\/www.mtv.com:80\/videos\/movies\/913738\/unbreakable-2-will-it-happen.jhtml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">MTV<\/a>, where the director stated that while he wants to return to tell the story of <strong>Unbreakable 2<\/strong>, he wants to make sure he isn&#8217;t doing it just to make a sequel but because he has something to say with the story.<\/p>\n<div style=\"background-color: #000000; width: 520px;\">\n<div style=\"padding: 4px;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/media.mtvnservices.com\/embed\/mgid:uma:video:mtv.com:913738\/cp~id%3D1708010%26vid%3D913738%26instance%3Dmtv%26uri%3Dmgid%3Auma%3Avideo%3Amtv.com%3A913738\" height=\"288\" width=\"512\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>In an interview with the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/2013\/05\/30\/m-night-shyamalan-after-earth_n_3354951.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Huffington Post<\/a> he expounds on it further &#8211;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Huffington Post: There\u2019s been talk of an \u201cUnbreakable\u201d sequel for a long time.<\/strong><br \/>\nM. Night Shyamalan: Yeah.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Samuel L. Jackson seems to want to do it. I saw you two talking on Twitter.<\/strong><br \/>\nIt\u2019s a harder one for me because \u2014 it\u2019s getting closer, by the way.<\/p>\n<p><strong>I feel like I\u2019ve heard that for the past 10 years. I want that to be true.<\/strong><br \/>\nI want it to happen, too. We\u2019ve been talking about almost the same subject in every one of your questions, which is artistic integrity \u2014 something versus an agenda. Right? And almost every single one of your questions was agenda versus intention, even though you didn\u2019t realize it, but it kind of fell into that theme as we were talking.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Agenda how?<\/strong><br \/>\nSo, like you think I go and I write, \u201cOh, I\u2019m going to write a twist ending.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>I didn\u2019t know. That\u2019s why I asked.<\/strong><br \/>\nThat\u2019s an agenda versus \u201cI want to talk about loneliness.\u201d And then it comes out, \u201cHow is the best way to talk about loneliness?\u201d Intention versus agenda. And then I go, \u201cOh my God, if I make a movie about loneliness and everybody hated it, will it be able to come out and people will get it?\u201d That\u2019s when you start going, \u201cOh my God,\u201d and you try to push that away. The same thing with \u201cUnbreakable,\u201d to some extent, it\u2019s excitement to be made. \u201cIt\u2019s such a fun thing\u201d is squashing my ability to find the thing that\u2019s connecting me with it. Does that make sense? So, I don\u2019t feel like I did it for agenda reasons. So, slowly I\u2019m getting a story in my head that I feel like is able to tell what I\u2019m feeling right now.<\/p>\n<p><strong>For people who like that movie, it sounds encouraging.<\/strong><br \/>\nYeah, it is! The story of a guy who kind of wakes up with a little gray feeling in the morning, I love that character. It\u2019s something that I feel and I want to talk more about that character.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>So are we closer to this happening? It&#8217;s been 13 years since the original film came out. At this point, the son of Bruce Willis&#8217;s character will have grown up to be a young man. Perhaps that might be a jumping off point for the story? Who knows?
