It seems like it has been a while since we’ve heard word of a remake of a film from the 1980s, so maybe we were overdue for this type of news, but Paramount is working on a remake of Joe Dante’s 1985 science-fiction adventure film Explorers<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The project, set up at Paramount\u2019s low-budget Insurge label, will be produced by Josh Appelbaum and Andre Nemec, the screenwriters of Mission: Impossible \u2013 Ghost Protocol<\/strong>. They have hired the writer-directors of Better Living Through Chemistry<\/strong>, Geoff Moore and Dave Posamentier, to pen the screenplay. There is no word yet if they will direct.<\/p>\n

Dante’s original film, about a trio of teenagers who built a spaceship in their backyard and encountered some alien visitors, was not a success when it was initially released in the summer of 1985. Some put it down to a troubled production that was rushed due to its release date being moved forward and the film’s third act virtually being written as it was shot. But like many `80s films that under-performed at the box office, the film managed to find an audience on home video. Today, Explorers is perhaps best remembered as the feature film debuts for Ethan Hawke and River Phoenix.<\/p>\n

The news comes on the heels that Michael Bay’s production shingle, Platinum Dunes, also at Paramount, is impressing studios execs with the upcoming Welcome To Yesterday<\/strong>, in which teens build a time machine.<\/p>\n
