\"936full-the-incredibles-poster\"<\/a>Not all the news that came from Disney’s earnings call was good. Ladies and gentlemen, it breaks my heart to be the one to tell this to you, but there’s going to be a Cars 3<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Disney CEO Bob Iger announced to investors that Pixar is actively developing sequels to its Cars <\/strong>and The Incredibles <\/strong>franchises.<\/p>\n

Generally, I consider any announcement of a Pixar sequel at best bittersweet. Pixar is so good at bringing original stories to the screen that I consider every sequel they make another original we wont see.<\/p>\n

And, not to be sacrosanct, I find the sequels to be a case of diminishing returns. Outside of the Toy Story <\/strong>franchise, each one I saw was not quite as good as the original.<\/p>\n

And when you have a film like Cars<\/strong>, definitely viewed as the weak link in Pixar’s line-up for a quality perspective, the diminishing returns can be fatal. Cars 2\u00a0<\/strong>was the worst reviewed film in Pixar’s catalog, replacing its predecessor for that distinction. But the franchise is a pet project of Pixar’s Chief Creative Office John Lasseter and does make money in the box office and toy aisles, so\u00a0Cars 3\u00a0<\/strong>we get, quality be damned.<\/p>\n

Mitigating this news a bit is the fact that The Incredibles’<\/strong> writer\/director Brad Bird is taking a hand in the development of the sequel. No word on whether he’ll be directing the film as of yet, but he is writing it, which is definitely a good thing.<\/p>\n

There’s also no word on when we’ll see these films, but it won’t be until 2017 at the earliest, as Pixar’s slate is full until then.<\/p>\n
