Comics Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele, the stars of the Comedy Central sketch series Key & Peele<\/em>, have signed on to produce New Line Cinema\u2019s reboot of the classic Police Academy<\/strong> franchise. They’ll be joining Paul Maslansky, who produced the original 1984 film starring Steve Guttenberg, in working on the project.<\/p>\n

Although never a critical favorite, the franchise was popular with audiences, a popularity helped by the home video boom of the 1980s, and ran seven installments.<\/p>\n

Maslansky had this to say about the reboot to the Hollywood Reporter<\/a> –<\/p>\n

It’s going to be very worthwhile to the people who remember it and to those who saw it on TV… t’s going to be a new class. We hope to discover new talent and season it with great comedians. It’ll be anything but another movie with a numeral next to it. And we’ll most probably retain the wonderful musical theme.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

New Line has been trying to restart the franchise for several years, but with little luck. Back in 2010, the attached first-time director Scott Zabielski but he is no longer with the project.<\/p>\n

Outside of their producing duties, there is no word as to what other jobs Key and Peele may take on for this new Police Academy<\/strong> movie. They are certainly involved on the creative side and it would not surprise me if they were to take a pass at the screenplay themselves. And if you’ve seen their show on Comedy Central you know that they have some pretty good comedy acting chops, so I don’t believe it would be a bad thing if they turned up in front of the camera as well.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
