\"Stargate\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Roland Emmerich is not stopping at an Independence Day<\/strong> sequel when it comes to reliving some of his past glories. Now he is looking back to his 1994 hit Stargate<\/strong>, not for a sequel, but for a remake that would be the first in a planned trilogy.<\/p>\n

Warner Brothers and MGM are pairing up for the project, which MGM will handle the production end and Warners distribute. Emmerich’s longtime producing partner Dean Devlin will be producing. There’s no word as to who will be providing the screenplay, but considering that Emmerich and Devlin wrote the original film, I wouldn’t be surprised if they took first crack at it.<\/p>\n

The original film was a hit, setting the record for the highest-grossing opening weekend in October before going on to earn almost $200 million at the world wide box office. A spin-off TV series without Emmerich and Devlin’s involvement first appeared on Showtime before moving over to the SciFi Channel where it would spawn two sequel series as well as a pair of direct-to-DVD features. Emmerich had talked about possibly returning to Stargate<\/strong> before, stating that he had some more tales he wanted to tell. I suppose a reboot is the best way to do that, as it avoids having to deal with the continuity of the television spinoff. The television franchise has garnered itself a loyal fandom and I am sure that at least some of them will be disappointed that a new big screen adventure will not feature characters and actors created for the various series.<\/p>\n

It may be a while before Emmerich and Devlin get to this project though. Emmerich is currently wrapping up working on Stonewall<\/strong>, a drama that looks at the Stonewall Riots in New York City which were a seminal moment in the gay rights movement. After that he dives right into his Independence sequels – ID Forever Parts 1<\/strong> and 2<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
