I was not a fan<\/a> of Tim Burton’s Alice In Wondreland<\/strong> from a few years back. I thought that its stated theme of Alice learning to not conform to other’s expectations of her was at odds with the screenplay making her accept the warrior role that virtually every character insisted she was fated for. That and Johnny Depp was uncharacteristically awful in it.<\/p>\n

But the film made a couple of truckloads of money, just over a billion dollars at the worldwide box office. So that means a sequel, which Disney has announced has started filming today. As we’ve known for some time, Burton is out of the director’s chair, being replaced by James Bobin. Most of the original cast is back and in the press release below you can glean a few clues as to what the plot may be.<\/p>\n

Disney\u2019s \u201cAlice In Wonderland: Through the Looking Glass\u201d begins principal photography this week, featuring an award-winning production team and all-star ensemble cast, including Johnny Depp, Anne Hathaway, Mia Wasikowska, Helena Bonham Carter and Sacha Baron Cohen. James Bobin (\u201cThe Muppets,\u201d \u201cMuppets Most Wanted\u201d) helms the film, which revisits Lewis Carroll\u2019s beloved stories with an all-new new tale that travels back to Underland\u2014and back in Time. \u201cAlice In Wonderland: Through the Looking Glass\u201d is produced by Joe Roth (\u201cMaleficent,\u201d \u201cAlice in Wonderland\u201d), Jennifer Todd (\u201cAlice In Wonderland,\u201d \u201cMemento\u201d), Suzanne Todd (\u201cAlice In Wonderland,\u201d \u201cMemento\u201d) and Tim Burton (\u201cAlice in Wonderland,\u201d \u201cFrankenweenie\u201d). John G. Scotti (\u201cMuppets Most Wanted,\u201d \u201cThe Muppets\u201d) is the executive producer; Linda Woolverton (\u201cMaleficent,\u201d \u201cAlice In Wonderland,\u201d \u201cBeauty and the Beast\u201d) penned the screenplay. Shooting on location and at Shepperton Studios in England, the film is slated for release on May 27, 2016.<\/p>\n

The all-star ensemble cast includes:<\/p>\n

Johnny Depp (\u201cPirates of the Caribbean\u201d films, \u201cAlice In Wonderland,\u201d \u201cMortdecai,\u201d \u201cBlack Mass\u201d) returns to the big screen as the Mad Hatter\u2014Hatter Tarrant Hightopp.
\nAnne Hathaway (\u201cLes Mis\u00e9rables,\u201d \u201cThe Devil Wears Prada,\u201d \u201cAlice In Wonderland,\u201d \u201cRachel\u2019s Getting Married\u201d) portrays the White Queen\u2014Mirana.
\nMia Wasikowska (\u201cTracks,\u201d \u201cJane Eyre\u201d and \u201cAlice In Wonderland\u201d) once again appears as Alice Kingsleigh, who\u2019s on a quest to help the Mad Hatter.
\nHelena Bonham Carter (\u201cCinderella,\u201d \u201cLes Mis\u00e9rables,\u201d \u201cAlice In Wonderland\u201d) returns as the Red Queen\u2014Iracebeth.
\nRhys Ifans (\u201cHarry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I,\u201d \u201cNanny McPhee Returns,\u201d \u201cThe Amazing Spider-Man\u201d) fills the shoes of Zanik Hightopp, the Mad Hatter\u2019s father.
\nMatt Lucas (\u201cThe Labrynth,\u201d \u201cAlice In Wonderland\u201d) returns to the revelry in a dual role as Tweedledee and Tweedledum.
\nEd Speleers (TV\u2019s \u201cDownton Abbey,\u201d \u201cEragon\u201d) portrays James Harcourt in the film.
\nAnd Sacha Baron Cohen (\u201cHugo,\u201d \u201cLes Mis\u00e9rables\u201d) was called on to bring Time to the big screen.<\/p>\n

\u201cAlice In Wonderland: Through the Looking Glass\u201d also boasts an extraordinary voice cast.<\/p>\n

Stephen Fry (\u201c24: Live Another Day,\u201d \u201cThe Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug,\u201d \u201cSherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows,\u201d \u201cAlice In Wonderland\u201d) is back as the voice of the Cheshire Cat.
\nToby Jones (\u201cThe Hunger Games: Catching Fire,\u201d \u201cInfamous,\u201d \u201cThe Girl\u201d) provides the voice of Wilkins.
\nAlan Rickman (\u201cHarry Potter\u201d film series, \u201cAlice In Wonderland,\u201d director\/actor\/co-writer \u201cA Little Chaos\u201d) returns as the voice of the Blue Caterpillar.
\nMichael Sheen (\u201cThe Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn\u201d Parts 1 & 2, \u201cAlice In Wonderland,\u201d \u201cThe Queen,\u201d \u201cFrost Nixon\u201d) once again serves as the voice of the White Rabbit.
\nTimothy Spall (\u201cMr. Turner,\u201d \u201cThe Kings Speech,\u201d \u201cHarry Potter,\u201d \u201cAlice In Wonderland\u201d) returns to voice Bayard.
\nBAFTA-winning actor, writer and comedian Paul Whitehouse (BBC\u2019s \u201cHarry and Paul\u2019s Story of the 2s\u201d and \u201cThe Fast Show\u201d; \u201cAlice In Wonderland,\u201d \u201cCorpse Bride\u201d) is back as the March Hare.
\nBarbara Windsor (\u201cCarry On,\u201d \u201cEastEnders,\u201d \u201cAlice In Wonderland\u201d) provides the voice of Dormouse again.<\/p>\n

The film welcomes back several key members of the \u201cAlice In Wonderland\u201d team, including award-winning composer Danny Elfman (\u201cFifty Shades of Grey,\u201d \u201cBig Eyes,\u201d Silver Linings Playbook\u201d), three-time Oscar\u00ae-winning costume designer Colleen Atwood (\u201cMemoirs of a Geisha,\u201d \u201cChicago\u201d), who won Oscar, BAFTA and Satellite awards, among others, for her work on \u201cAlice In Wonderland,\u201d and five-time Oscar-winning VFX supervisor Ken Ralston (\u201cForrest Gump,\u201d \u201cStar Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi\u201d), who won a Satellite Award for best visual effects for \u201cAlice In Wonderland.\u201d<\/p>\n
