Stating that &#8220;the film is appropriate viewing for mature adolescents,&#8221; the theater will be &#8220;admit high school-aged patrons at [their] discretion.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The news comes via <a href=\"https:\/\/www.techdirt.com\/articles\/20141208\/08351629353\/ifc-center-rejects-mpaas-r-rating-snowden-documentary-says-it-should-be-essential-viewing.shtml\" target=\"_blank\">TechDirt<\/a>, who provided this photo from outside the ticket booth at the theater&#8217;s downtown box office.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.filmbuffonline.com\/FBOLNewsreel\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/IFCCitizenfour.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-35212\" src=\"http:\/\/www.filmbuffonline.com\/FBOLNewsreel\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/IFCCitizenfour.jpg\" alt=\"IFCCitizenfour\" width=\"507\" height=\"676\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.filmbuffonline.com\/FBOLNewsreel\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/IFCCitizenfour.jpg 507w, https:\/\/www.filmbuffonline.com\/FBOLNewsreel\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/IFCCitizenfour-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 507px) 100vw, 507px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This is not the first time that the IFC Center has disregarded an R rating from the MPAA. The theater is <a href=\"http:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20160304111316\/http:\/\/www.ifccenter.com\/news\/boyhood-rating\/\" target=\"_blank\">already waiving<\/a> the R rating for Richard Linklater\u2019s <strong>Boyhood<\/strong>, with the same rationale that both &#8220;films are appropriate viewing for mature adolescents.&#8221; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.filmbuffonline.com\/FBOLNewsreel\/wordpress\/2013\/10\/25\/nycs-ifc-center-rejects-mpaas-nc-17-rating-for-blue-is-the-warmest-color\/\" target=\"_blank\">Last year<\/a>, they opened up their doors for adolescents to see the French coming-of-age drama <strong>Blue Is The Warmest Color<\/strong>, which the MPAA gave a NC-17 rating due to its graphic lesbian love story. In 2012, the AMC theater chain ignored the MPAA\u2019s rating on the documentary <strong>Bully<\/strong>, arguing that the very teens who would be excluded by the R rating that the MPAA gave the film are the ones who should see the film the most.<\/p>\n<p>IFC\u2019s actions speak to two things. The first is a reminder that the ratings system is entirely voluntary, with the weight of no law behind it to back it up.
