Specifically, the director of the first such film, due in December 2016, Gareth Edwards confirmed details about the story that have been <a href=\"http:\/\/www.filmbuffonline.com\/FBOLNewsreel\/wordpress\/2014\/11\/25\/is-this-the-plot-for-the-first-star-wars-spin-off-film\/\" target=\"_blank\">rumored for months<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Edwards stated that <strong>Star Wars: Rogue One<\/strong> would be set between the original Star Wars trilogy and the prequel trilogy and be centered on a group of rebels on a mission to steal the Death Star plans, confirming rumors that first began circulating last November. &#8220;It comes down to a group of individuals who don\u2019t have magical powers that have to somehow bring hope to the galaxy.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The official Star Wars twitter account tweeted out the description at the same time.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">A band of resistance fighters unite for a daring mission to steal the Death Star plans in Star Wars anthology film, Rogue One <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/RogueOne?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#RogueOne<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Star Wars (@starwars) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/starwars\/status\/589857369322037249?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 19, 2015<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Edwards further stressed that he was going for perhaps a little grittier tone, referencing such films as <strong>Zero Dark Thirty<\/strong> and <strong>Saving Private Ryan<\/strong>. But, we also know how any movie about World War Two will ultimate end. (With the exception of <strong>Inglorious Basterds<\/strong>, of course.) The trick here is for Edwards to create characters we care about and the drama\/tension comes from who will make it back alive. This is a &#8220;men on a mission&#8221; film set in the <strong>Star Wars<\/strong> universe.<\/p>\n<p>It was also revealed at the panel that the idea for the film came from Industrial Light and Magic\u2019s chief creative officer (and co-creator of Photoshop) John Knoll, who will be getting a story credit for the film. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.filmbuffonline.com\/FBOLNewsreel\/wordpress\/2015\/01\/26\/star-wars-stand-alone-film-taps-oscar-nominated-scribe\/\" target=\"_blank\">Currently<\/a>, Chris Weitz, who earned an Academy Award nomination for adapting the novel <em>About A Boy<\/em> to the big screen, is working on the film&#8217;s screenplay, taking over from Gary Whitta.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy announced that <strong>Rogue One<\/strong> and the other stand alone, spinoff films being developed will all fall under the umbrella title of <strong>Star Wars: Anthology<\/strong>, a title suggested by George Lucas.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<div class=\"mh-excerpt\">More film news out of the Star Wars Celebration con today in Anaheim, this time focusing on the spinoff films that will becoming out in the years between Episodes 7, 8 and 9.
