Well, we don\u2019t know who will be directing it, but we now know who the second Star Wars: Anthology<\/strong> film will feature \u2013 fan favorite bounty hunter Boba Fett.<\/p>\n

The Wrap<\/a> is reporting that the film, set for a 2018 release, will be an \u201corigin story,\u201d Presumably, this places the story somewhere between Boba Fett\u2019s childhood as seen in Star Wars: Episode 2 \u2013 Attack Of The Clones<\/strong> and his adult appearances in the Original Trilogy. That still is a wide swath of time into which the story could fit, and indeed, it may take place over a long time period. The news does confirm the long-standing rumor that one of the standalone films announced back in 2013 when George Lucas sold Lucasfilm and Star Wars<\/strong> to Disney would feature the character Fett.<\/p>\n

The first Star Wars: Anthology<\/strong> film, Rogue One<\/strong> is set for a December 2016 release and will feature the story of a group of Rebel commandos on a mission to steal the plans to the Death Star. It will star Felicity Jones, Ben Mendelsohn and Riz Ahmed.<\/p>\n

Part of the appeal of Boba Fett has always been the mysterious aura the character had when he first appeared in The Empire Strikes Back<\/strong>. And I think that much of that was undercut in the Prequel Trilogy when we learn that Boba is actually a clone of his father Jango Fett, a warrior who was serving as the template for the clone troopers being grown for the Republic. (The debate over whether Boba Fett\u2019s demise in Return Of The Jedi<\/strong> being played for laughs also undercuts the character we can have at another time.) While it is not implicitly spelled out, I think the character\u2019s journey between where we see him at the end of Attack Of The Clones<\/strong> and his reappearance in Empire<\/strong> can be easily implied. I don\u2019t think it really needs to be spelled out. Patton Oswald hit the nail on the head with a comedy piece (see below) about the Prequels and their incessant need to fill in every bit of background in the Star Wars<\/strong> universe. Now I am not saying that I wouldn\u2019t mind seeing a movie in which Boba Fett is running around being all badass and such, I just don\u2019t think it needs to be something that connects dots we’ve already managed to connect ourselves.<\/p>\n

Simon Kinberg is writing and producing the as still yet untitled film. Josh Trank had been set to direct the film, but it was announced last week<\/a> that was no longer the case. It remains unclear if he jumped or was pushed off the project.<\/p>\n
