This afternoon at the the Disney fan expo D23, Lucasfilm held court and made several Star Wars<\/strong>-related announcements, starting off with the release of the first cast photo for the first non-Skywalker family saga film – Rogue One<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

But first a few notes. During the panel, the film was referred to with the subtitle A Star Wars Story<\/strong>, as seen in the also-released title logo above. That is terrible, as it sounds more like a children’s book than the gritty war story that we’ve been told that the film will be. (An assertion upheld by the cast photo below.) Previously, we were told that the spin-off Star Wars films would fall under the Star Wars Anthology<\/strong> banner. The change is not a good one.<\/p>\n

But along with the release of the first cast photo, Lucasfilm also confirmed the film’s main cast beyond the previously known Felicity Jones, Riz Ahmed, Diego Luna, Ben Mendelsohn, and Forest Whitaker. Joining them will be Donnie Yen, Jiang Wen and Mads Mikkelsen. Fan favorite Alan Tudyk is also in the cast, playing a performance-capture character.<\/p>\n

Resistance Fighters Unite to Steal Plans for Death Star<\/p>\n

SAN FRANCISCO, CALIF. (August 15, 2015)\u2014Lucasfilm announced today that their first film in the new standalone Star Wars stories series, \u201cRogue One,\u201d has begun principal photography. Gareth Edwards (\u201cGodzilla,\u201d \u201cMonsters\u201d) is directing \u201cRogue One,\u201d which tells the story of resistance fighters who have united to steal plans to the dreaded Death Star. The film is produced by Kathleen Kennedy and is slated for a December 16, 2016 release.<\/p>\n

The filmmakers have assembled a stellar cast, including Felicity Jones, nominated for an Academy Award\u00ae for her leading role in \u201cThe Theory of Everything\u201d; Diego Luna, who was featured in 2008\u2019s Oscar\u00ae-winning \u201cMilk\u201d and the critically acclaimed \u201cKilling Them Softly\u201d; Ben Mendelsohn, recently nominated for an Emmy\u00ae for his leading role in \u201cBloodline\u201d and co-starring in the upcoming \u201cMississippi Grind\u201d; Donnie Yen, Hong Kong action star and martial artist who starred in \u201cIp Man\u201d and \u201cBlade II\u201d; Jiang Wen, who co-wrote, produced , directed and starred in the award-winning \u201cLet the Bullets Fly\u201d and \u201cDevils on the Doorstep\u201d; Forest Whitaker, recently featured in the critically-acclaimed Lee Daniels\u2019 \u201cThe Butler\u201d and winner of an Academy Award\u00ae for his leading role in 2006\u2019s \u201cThe Last King of Scotland; Mads Mikkelsen, who starred in \u201cThe Hunt\u201d and was the memorable villain from 2006\u2019s \u201cCasino Royale\u201d; Alan Tudyk, who plays a performance-capture character in \u201cRogue One,\u201d stars in the soon-to-be-released \u201cCon Man\u201d series and \u201cTrumbo,\u201d which releases this November; and Riz Ahmed, who was recently featured in \u201cNightcrawler\u201d and starred in the BAFTA-winning film \u201cFour Lions.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201c\u2018Rogue One\u2019 takes place before the events of Star Wars: A New Hope and will be a departure from the saga films but have elements that are familiar to the Star Wars universe,\u201d says Kathleen Kennedy. \u201cIt goes into new territory, exploring the galactic struggle from a ground-war perspective while maintaining that essential Star Wars feel that fans have come to know. Gareth is such an innovative director and I\u2019m so excited to be working with him and the extraordinary ensemble cast he\u2019s selected for \u2018Rogue One.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Veteran ILM visual effects supervisor John Knoll, who shares a long history with the Star Wars movies, dating back to the mid-1990s, originated the idea for the movie. Allison Shearmur (\u201cThe Hunger Games: Catching Fire,\u201d \u201cCinderella\u201d), John Knoll, Simon Emanuel (\u201cThe Dark Knight Rises,\u201d \u201cFast & Furious 6\u201d) and Jason McGatlin (\u201cTintin,\u201d \u201cWar of the Worlds\u201d) are executive producers. Kiri Hart and John Swartz (\u201cStar Wars: The Force Awakens\u201d) are co-producers.<\/p>\n

To create the lived-in, realistic feel of \u201cRogue One,\u201d Edwards chose Greig Fraser (\u201cZero Dark Thirty,\u201d \u201cFoxcatcher\u201d) to be his director of photography and Neil Corbould (\u201cBlack Hawk Down,\u201d \u201cGladiator,\u201d \u201cSaving Private Ryan\u201d) to be his special effects supervisor. Star Wars and Lucasfilm veteran Doug Chiang (\u201cStar Wars: Episodes I-II,\u201d \u201cForrest Gump\u201d) and Neil Lamont (supervising art director for the \u201cHarry Potter\u201d series, \u201cEdge of Tomorrow\u201d) will be the production designers. Additional crew members will include stunt coordinator Rob Inch (\u201cWorld War Z,\u201d Marvel\u2019s \u201cCaptain America: The First Avenger\u201d), creature effects supervisor Neal Scanlan (\u201cPrometheus\u201d) and co-costume designers Dave Crossman (costume supervisor for the \u201cHarry Potter\u201d series, \u201cSaving Private Ryan\u201d) and Glyn Dillon (costume concept artist for \u201cKingsman: The Secret Service,\u201d \u201cJupiter Ascending\u201d).<\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
