For most animation fans, Japan’s Studio Ghibli is pretty much known for the output of its most prolific director Hayao Miyazaki. But believe it or not, the studio does boast other talented directors including Studio Ghibli co-founder co-founder Isao Takahata. And now one of Takahata’s classic films that have so far not had an official release in the United States is finally making its way to our shores.<\/p>\n

GKIDS picked up the rights to Takahata’s 1991 drama Only Yesterday<\/strong> recently and have been in the process of remastering the film, along with recording a brand new English-dub track featuring Star Wars<\/strong>‘ Daisy Ridley and Slumdog Millionaire<\/strong>‘s Dev Patel. GKIDS, who previously handled the US release of such Studio Ghibli fare as When Marnie Was There<\/strong>, Goro Miyazaki\u2019s From Up on Poppy Hill<\/strong>, and the documentary The Kingdom Of Dreams And Madness<\/strong> about the making of Hayao Miyazaki\u2019s final film, The Wind Rises<\/strong>, will be releasing Only Yesterday on January 1, 2016 in New York City before expanding nationwide in February.<\/p>\n

Takahata created Only Yesterday after the release of his emotional powerhouse Graveyard Of The Fireflies<\/strong>. It tells the story of a young woman recalling her youth in the Japanese countryside of the 1960s. Takahata also directed the animated features Pom Poko<\/strong> and the hauntingly beautiful The Tale of the Princess Kaguya<\/strong>, which was nominated for a Best Animated Feature Academy Award last year.<\/p>\n
