Scoop or educated guess? That’s the question we have regarding the story from Heroic Hollywood this weekend about a future storyline for Sony and Marvel’s X-Men<\/strong> franchise. According to the site’s publisher Umberto Gonzalez, the reliability-challenged former El Mayimbe from Latino Review, after this summer’s X-Men: Apocalypse<\/strong>, the next storyline that the comic book-based franchise will tackle is the classic “The Dark Phoenix Saga.”<\/p>\n

For the uninitiated, the Dark Phoenix Saga told the story of how mutant superhero Jean Grey became host to an alien force that slowly brings out her dark side, ultimately reaching a point where she could destroy the planet in a fit of pique with her god-level powers. After doing just that to an alien world, two warring intergalactic empires join forces and come to Earth and demand Jean’s death. In the end she volunteers to be put to death rather than let the dark force inside her completely overtake and destroy first herself and then the world.<\/p>\n

The X-Men<\/strong> film franchise did try to tackle this storyline once before, in the second and third films of the original trilogy. Director Bryan Singer, however, did not direct the third film, which was not very well regarded, and most recently with the time-traveling in the last X-Men<\/strong> film, Days Of Future Past<\/strong>, has pretty much created a new continuity where the events of that film never came to pass.<\/p>\n

Now, Heroic Hollywood does support their reporting with a couple of quotes. First, from producer Simon Kinberg speaking to IGN<\/a> and explaining how Days Of Future Past<\/strong> has reset the franchise in a way that would allow future installments to tell any story they wish, not tied to what was shown in the first three films.<\/p>\n

I think everything that hasn’t been told from First Class and Days of Future Past is up for grabs going forward, so it would absolutely be a story we could tell in a different way.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Singer further hinted at a possible do over on the Dark Phoenix Saga in a recent interview with EW<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Jean, she has not only has her telekinesis and her telepathy, but she also knows inherently that something darker and more powerful is growing inside her and she doesn’t quite know what it is.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

So, is Heroic Hollywood privy to inside information or are they just connecting some dots to form a picture we pretty much already saw before the dot connection? Gonzalez’s track record at Latino Review was questionable at times and there are those in the fan community, myself included, who often raise eyebrows at any of his reporting.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
