The nominees for the Hugo Awards, the prestigious prizes handed out for excellence in science-fiction every year at the World Science Fiction Convention, aka World Con, were announced today and a glance at the Best Dramatic Presentation- Long Form category – i.e., movies – doesn’t reveal any surprising omissions or inclusions.<\/p>\n

The five films nominated are The Avengers : Age Of Ultron<\/strong>, Ex Machina<\/strong>, Mad Max: Fury Road<\/strong>, The Martian<\/strong> and Star Wars: The Force Awakens<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Handicapping this category is a bit difficult, as it has only been in existence since 2003. Prior to that there was just one Dramatic Presentation category that encompassed both television and film in competition against each other.<\/p>\n

If Hugo voters are going to lean towards hard science-fiction, than it will be a contest between Ex Machina<\/strong> and The Martian<\/strong>. But they don’t always lean that way, though. Last year’s winner was Guardians Of The Galaxy<\/strong>, though given the underwhelming critical response to this year’s Marvel offering, Age Of Ultron<\/strong>, I would say that it would be a long shot for the film to win.<\/p>\n

If nostalgia rules the day, Star Wars: The Force Awakens<\/strong> should be the winner given that the film is a throwback in many ways to the original Star Wars<\/strong> trilogy and all three of those films won Hugos their respective years of nomination. The prequel trilogy films did not receive any nominations.<\/p>\n

And that just leaves Mad Max: Fury Road<\/strong>. Director George Miller’s franchise has received a nomination in the past with 1983’s Mad Max: The Road Warrior<\/strong>. Even given its post-apocalyptic setting and its positive feminist message, will the film be to voters liking?<\/p>\n

The winners will be announced on August 20th at the 74th World Science Fiction Convention in Kansas City.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
