Both are critical darlings that were expected to do well in the awards season. What is surprising is that Deadpool, the film with everyone’s favorite Merc With a Mouth, garnered two nominations, one for Ryan Reynolds as best actor and the film itself for best motion picture. Before you get excited that it might take home an award, the film is in the same category as La La Land, so it has zero chance there and while Reynolds has a slightly better chance against that film’s Ryan Gosling, don’t get your hopes up.

But the Golden Globes are thought to be a precursor of the Oscar nominations. Does this mean that Deadpool will get a Oscar nod for Best Picture and Best Actor there too? Not necessarily. Deadpool has a better chance at getting a Best Picture nod, as the Academy can nominate up to 10 films for the Oscar in that category. However, the Golden Globes breakdown the Best Actor nominations into Drama and Musical/Comedy, which allows for more nominees. Odds are likely neither the film nor Reynolds will get an Oscar nod, but the film has a better chance just due to nominations spots.

Another surprise is that Pixar’s Finding Dory did not get a nod for Best Animated Feature Film while Disney’s two-in house animated films, Zootopia and Moana, did. This is more evidence of the shift from Pixar to Disney Animation Studios as the dominant computer animated film studio.

Here is the full list of the film nominations:

Best Motion Picture –
