Unless you’re near a big city, it’s unlikely that you’ll get to see many of the films that have landed nominations in the Academy Awards’ Best Documentary Feature category during their initial, often small, theatrical release. Thankfully, three out of the five films – Life Animated<\/strong>, OJ: Made In America<\/strong> and The 13th<\/strong> – are readily available. If you have a Netflix DVD subscription you are pretty much set. Oddly enough, this year two of the films won’t even be available on any home video platform. The examination of the 1960s Civil Rights struggle – I Am Not Your Negro<\/strong> – goes into limited release this coming weekend. But Fire At Sea<\/strong>, while having had a small release in the fall, will not be available on home video platforms until three weeks after the Oscars. That’s a bad break for anyone who likes to watch all of the films before the Oscars are handed out or before they fill out their Academy Awards office pool picks.<\/p>\n

The 89th Academy Awards will be handed out on February 26th.<\/p>\n

Fire At Sea<\/strong>
\nWon’t be released on any platform until March 21, 2017<\/p>\n

I Am Not Your Negro<\/strong>
\nAfter screening at several film festivals and doing an Academy Awards qualifying run at the end of last year, the film will open in selected cities on February 3. It won’t be released on any home platform until June 13, 2017<\/p>\n
