The MonsterVerse Cinematic Universe lumbered forward today as production started on Godzilla 2<\/strong>, the followup to the 2014 English language Franchise opener. The studio popped out a press release which reveals the film’s full cast as well as the first official plot synopsis. We’ll let you proceed at your own risk, though the spoilers are pretty lite. At worst they let you know who the Big G will be squaring off in the sequel, even though that was pretty much spoiled at 2014’s San Diego Comic Con<\/a> and in the end credit scene from Kong: Skull Island<\/strong> earlier this year.<\/p>\n

One thing to note, is that the press release doesn’t refer to the film’s previously announced title Godzilla: King Of the Monsters<\/strong>. Has the project undergone a name change? I’m sure we’ll find out at some point before the film opens in theaters on March 22, 2019.<\/p>\n

BURBANK, Calif.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Following the global success of 2014\u2019s \u201cGodzilla\u201d and this year\u2019s \u201cKong: Skull Island,\u201d comes the next chapter in Warner Bros. Pictures\u2019 and Legendary Pictures\u2019 cinematic MonsterVerse: an epic action adventure that pits Godzilla against some of the most popular monsters in pop culture history.<\/p>\n

The film, which begins principal photography today, is being directed by Michael Dougherty (\u201cKrampus\u201d), and stars Oscar nominees Vera Farmiga (\u201cUp in the Air,\u201d \u201cThe Conjuring\u201d films), and Ken Watanabe (\u201cThe Last Samurai\u201d) and Sally Hawkins (\u201cBlue Jasmine\u201d), both reprising their \u201cGodzilla\u201d roles; Kyle Chandler (\u201cThe Wolf of Wall Street,\u201d \u201cManchester by the Sea\u201d); Millie Bobby Brown (\u201cStranger Things\u201d) in her feature film debut; Bradley Whitford (\u201cGet Out\u201d); Thomas Middleditch (HBO\u2019s \u201cSilicon Valley\u201d); Charles Dance (HBO\u2019s \u201cGame of Thrones\u201d); O\u2019Shea Jackson Jr. (\u201cStraight Outta Compton\u201d); Aisha Hinds (\u201cStar Trek Into Darkness\u201d); and Golden Globe nominee Zhang Ziyi (\u201cMemoirs of a Geisha,\u201d \u201cCrouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon\u201d).<\/p>\n

The new story follows the heroic efforts of the crypto-zoological agency Monarch as its members face off against a battery of god-sized monsters, including the mighty Godzilla, who collides with Mothra, Rodan, and his ultimate nemesis, the three-headed King Ghidorah. When these ancient super-species\u2014thought to be mere myths\u2014rise again, they all vie for supremacy, leaving humanity\u2019s very existence hanging in the balance.<\/p>\n

Dougherty directs from a script he wrote with Zach Shields. The film is being produced by Mary Parent, Alex Garcia, Brian Rogers and Thomas Tull, with Barry H. Waldman, Zach Shields, Yoshimitsu Banno and Kenji Okuhira serving as executive producers and Alexandra Mendes co-producing for Legendary.<\/p>\n

Behind the scenes, Dougherty\u2019s creative team includes director of photography Lawrence Sher, whose past credits include \u201cWar Dogs\u201d and \u201cGodzilla,\u201d for which he handled additional photography; production designer Scott Chambliss (\u201cGuardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2,\u201d \u201cStar Trek Into Darkness\u201d); editor Roger Barton (\u201cPirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales,\u201d the \u201cTransformers\u201d films); costume designer Louise Migenbach (the \u201cX-Men\u201d and \u201cHangover\u201d films); and Oscar-winning VFX supervisor Guillaume Rocheron (\u201cGodzilla,\u201d \u201cGhost in the Shell,\u201d and part of the Oscar-winning team behind \u201cLife of Pi \u201d).<\/p>\n

Filming is taking place mainly in Atlanta, Georgia. A presentation of Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures, the film is currently scheduled for release in March 2019, and will be distributed in 3D and 2D and in select IMAX theaters by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros.
