Filming on Godzilla: King Of The Monsters<\/strong> – the next installment in Legendary’s MonsterVerse franchise – only began just a few weeks ago. As such, the film didn’t have any real footage to bring to San Diego Comic Con this year to show off. But that didn’t stop the film from making it’s presence felt during the show as yesterday afternoon it tweeted out from its Monarch twitter account the following first look at the giant monster Mothra for the upcoming film.<\/p>\n

Monarch, of course, is the Monsterverse organization tasked to protect Earth from giant kaiju like Godzilla and King Kong. The opening credits of the previous two MonsterVerse films – Godzilla<\/strong> (2014) and this year’s Kong: Skull Island<\/strong> – have both been montages of Monarch documents, slowly fleshing out the cinematic world and the organization’s work. It’s a fun conceit that adds a nice depth to the films. How much this tweet will actually play into the film remains to be seen.<\/p>\n

Here’s the studio’s official synopsis, naming all three monsters Godzilla will be meeting up with in this installment – <\/p>\n

The new story follows the heroic efforts of the crypto-zoological agency Monarch as its members face off against a battery of god-sized monsters, including the mighty Godzilla, who collides with Mothra, Rodan, and his ultimate nemesis, the three-headed King Ghidorah. When these ancient super-species \u2013 thought to be mere myths \u2013 rise again, they all vie for supremacy, leaving humanity’s very existence hanging in the balance.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

We saw hints of this upcoming tussle of titans at the end of Kong: Skull Island<\/strong> where Tom Hiddleston and Brie Larson’s characters are told by Monarch scientists that the giant ape they encountered is not the only monster out there. They are then shown cave paintings (see below) depicting Godzilla, Mothra, Rodan and King Ghidorah, indicating to audiences what to expect in this upcoming film. Kong and Godzilla face off after this film in the aptly named Godzilla Vs Kong<\/strong> in 2020.<\/p>\n

Godzilla: King Of The Monsters<\/strong> is set to star Vera Farmiga, Ken Watanabe, Sally Hawkins, Kyle Chandler, Millie Bobby Brown, Bradley Whitford, Thomas Middleditch, Charles Dance, O’Shea Jackson Jr., Aisha Hinds and Zhang Ziyi. It will roar into theaters on March 22, 2019.<\/p>\n
