Anne Hathaway is taking Amy Schumer’s place behind the wheel of the pink convertible that is Sony’s Barbie<\/strong> film.<\/p>\n

Hathaway is reportedly in negotiations to take on the lead role in the film inspired by the iconic toy doll. Schumer had been originally cast for the title role last year, but departed the project in March over reported “scheduling conflicts.”<\/p>\n

And while Sony is working on setting a deal for a star for the project, they are also working on lining up a director as well. Australian director Aletha Jones is also reportedly in talks with the studio to helm the film, having been recommended for the job by Hathaway. <\/p>\n

Currently, the studio has the film scheduled for a June 29, 2018 and if they want to meet that they need to get things moving fast. The Reporter notes that Hathaway’s commitments to other projects may become a sticking point, forcing the studio to either move that release date or find someone with better availability who can jump in quick enough to meet that date.<\/p>\n

The Barbie movie (at least, the Schumer version) was to turn the classic Barbie mythology on its head, putting a contemporary spin on the toy with an emphasis on feminism and identity. The script told of a woman that slowly awakens to the fact that she doesn\u2019t fit into the perfect land of Barbies and journeys to the real world, where she discovers that being unique is an asset.
